Playing Doctor – (Chapter: chapter 1)

“Alright Kyla, who is first on the books today?”

“Well, Wilson Addison is due for 11, they called and said they are going to be a little late.”

“I bet she had to drag him in again, god that kid is so stubborn, you would think he would want to but the effort in ya know? Kids usually bounce back the quickest but he just won’t give it a damn try.”

“I’m sure its really frustrating Spence, some days I don’t know how you do it.”

“I still don’t get it, I mean I know they are boys but what kind of jackasses have firecracker fights, he is lucky he only lost some mobility in his hand, the whole arm could have blown off”

“You know how it is at that age though, boys pulling all kinds of stunts to impress cute girls.”

“Aww yes nothing says love quiet like being pushed down flights of stairs in a shopping cart.”

“You’re telling me you never had a little crush on the daredevils?”

    “Nope.”

    “Liar”

“I was far too interested in the girls in bikinis to pay attention to the back flips the guys did off the diving board.”

“Really Spence? You knew that young”

“I think on some level you always know, for me at least”

A little after 11:15 the Addisons arrived. I directed the unenthusiastic teen and the exhausted mother into my office. It had been about a month since Wilson’s accident and he became less and less interested in a recovery as the weeks went on.

“Okay, so you know the drill, make a fist for me with your thumb inside. Now, when I push like this can u feel it?”

“Umm I guess” great not only was I his physical therapist but today I was his mind reader as well.

“On a 1 to 10 scale how much feeling would you say?”

    “Like a 2”

    “That’s it, 2?”

God this kid really tested my nerves sometimes

“Wilson have you been doing your hand exercises every night like I told you to do?”

“Yes Dr. Carlin, sometimes I just do them for fun, they are so much fun”
