Living for Love: Chapter 5
For the next two weeks, Dana was driven by two things: Love for Alice and for her families. She was all work and little play. She’d go to therapy, eat her meals, and limit her "Alice Time" to just 2 visits a week. Dr. Ira Wilson made regular visits to see how Dana was doing on her recovery. Dana kept nagging her about getting out for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It didn’t help her by answering any questions how the doctor wanted. Even Helena got to visit Dana once a week, usually to moan and groan about work. Dana felt absolute pity for Helena and worry for the people she had to serve with a smile on her face.
Dana said, ‘Bette would be so proud now. A rich heiress who is now officially "Working Class Trash".’ And she played a harmonica.
Helena whined, ‘Does it really seem too hard for people to clean up their own messes? It almost makes me dread what their homes are like. Just be happy you’re in here and not out there. As a matter of fact, if I ever become one of those people who treat others like crap because of some self-induced sense of superiority, just put me out of my misery.’
Dana said, ‘No problem. I guess they feel that they’ve got some kind of immunity which gives them the right to treat others rotten. At least you only deal with them for a few hours. There are some who have to live with them. But other than that, how’s your life?’
Helena said, ‘My mother is enjoying HER get together with HER new lady friend, Clara, with HER money. Me, I’m just trying to make ends meat with 30 hours a week by collecting shopping carts, giving vitamin advice for men and women, and getting these half-assed sympathy cards from Winnie. I swear that woman knew I was cut off when my mother decided it. I wouldn’t put it past her to suggest it just to see me crawl for scraps.’
‘Only because you crawl so cute and she likes the view’, Dana teased.
Helena let out a mild growl. Dr. Wilson entered the room with a notepad in hand. Helena could tell that this was a doctor/patient moment so she took a step out.
Dr. Wilson asked, ‘Hi, Dana. How are you doing today?’
Dana said, ‘I’m doing just fine, doc. I’m feeling a little cold.’
Ira said, ‘Well, that only comes with the weather. I send up a warm blanket for you. Your therapy seems to be coming along nice.’
Dana agreed, ‘Yeah. Michael’s a pretty nice guy. He still doesn’t like losing our wheelchair races. But other than that, he’s okay.’
Ira took out her pad and showed it to Dana. All her records showed Dana to be in good health. It was a little out of protocol, but Ira asked Dana for her autograph. It wasn’t like she was trying to bother Dana while she was there. She wanted to use her autograph for other patients in the hospital. Dana was already inspiring them into recovery just by being alive and not giving up. This would help encourage the patients who were faced with their own death.
Dana signed the notepad, ‘The fate of our lives will be decided as it should be….in Mortal Kombat. But we will not go down easy and we will not go down alone. Stay strong and stay proud, Dana Fairbanks.’

Mortal Kombat?? I laughed really loudly at that, and scared the people around me, but it was worth it. I really like this story, great update and I can’t wait to read more!
