    Forever Friends Ch. 2

“Clear!” the doctor yelled for the fourth time as he placed to paddles on Dana and shocked her again.

This time Dana’s heart slowly began to beat.  Doctor’s and nurses began to surround Dana, connecting her to more monitors and filling her body with more medications.

As the doctors and nurses continued to stabilize Dana, Shane came running in the room.  Seeing Alice still sitting on the floor sobbing, Shane ran in, dropped to her knees, and slid into Alice wrapping her into a tight embrace.  The nurse who was holding Alice let go and backed away giving the friends their privacy.  Shane could feel the tears starting to slowly run down her cheeks as she tried to comfort Alice.

When Dana’s heart stopped Alice was not around so the hospital called the next emergency contact for Dana who was Shane.  Shane raced to the hospital hoping to find Alice, afraid of what Alice might do if she was alone and heard the news.  Shane and Alice were both so upset that neither of them realized Dana was still alive.

Carmen reached Dana’s room a few minutes later and spoke to one of the nurses before entering the room.  The nurse informed Carmen that Dana’s heart had stopped but they were able to revive her and stabilize her as much as possible, but that she was still touch and go.  When Carmen entered the room she immediately began to tear up seeing Shane and Alice so sad.   Carmen walked over to them and watched for a minute as Shane cried, rocking Alice in her arms as Alice continued to say, “I love you.  I can’t live without you.”  Carmen wrapped both of them in her arms, kissed Shane on top of her head, and whispered in Alice’s ear “You don’t have to.  She’s alive.”

Shane looked at Carmen as if she had lost her mind.  It couldn’t be possible, Shane saw the doctors working on Dana with her own eyes, Dana was gone.  Carmen saw the questioning look Shane was giving her and nodded towards Dana.  It was then that Shane looked over and saw her breathing, Dana wasn’t gone.

Shane turned back to Alice and slowly pulled Alice away.  Not wanting to let go, Alice held on to Shane tighter and Shane used a little more force to push Alice away and look her in the eye.  “Alice.  She’s not gone.  Dana is still fighting.”  Alice did not believe her and continued to sob.  Realizing Alice would not believe that Dana was still alive without seeing her, Shane slowly stood up, pulling a limp Alice to her feet and slowly dragged her over to Dana’s bedside.  While holding Alice up with her right arm, Shane held Alice’s hand with her left hand and slowly moved their hands over to Dana.  Shane placed Alice’s hand in Dana’s and it was then that Alice slowly opened her eyes and saw that Dana was still with her.

Alice slowly turned towards Shane, with tear filled red puffy eyes and slowly and simply said, “Yoda, she didn’t leave me.”  Then Alice squeezed Dana’s hand, carefully laid her head on Dana’s chest above her heart, whispered “I love you” and listened to Dana’s heart slowly beat beneath her.
