The Absence of One chapter 38

Both women turned toward the newcomer. The smiling faces disappeared. Yet, neither Bette nor Tina moved away from their embrace.

“Barbara,” Bette mustered a weak hello.

“I’ll wait for you by the pool,” the former senator hurried out without glancing at the two.

Unconsciously, they held each other closer. The clock ticked, and Tina peeked at her ex-wife. A gamut of emotions flashed in Bette’s eyes; she could feel the woman’s heart rate raging within.

    “It’ll be ok,” Tina offered.

She scoffed. “I’m not sure about that, but I’m inclined to believe you.”

Tina bit down the dangerous mix of anger and jealousy Barbara’s existence had incited. “I don’t think the senator is someone who doesn’t listen to reason.”

Bette moved away reluctantly, trying to formulate her talking points with Barbara. Tina stood in the middle of the living room, her eyes tracking Bette’s movements with worry. She debated what to do. On one hand, she could wait on the couch, pretending to be busy. On the other hand, she could stay and watch the events unfold.

“Barbara,” Bette approached the woman slowly.

“I thought I’d surprise you, but I guess the joke’s on me, huh,” Barbara spoke with her back to Bette. Her shoulders were tight with tension; a slight frown was pasted on her face.

    Her body tensed. “I’m sorry.”

This time, the former senator did face Bette. “Don’t be. I knew what I was getting into when I moved to LA.”

    “You mean…”

Barbara nodded. It was a long shot, but she was encouraged by their progress. Then, DC came calling again. “I actually came back for you.”

    Bette frowned. “Oh?”

“The hearings start in a week,” she replied. “I was hoping that you could accompany me to DC. I know school’s out for the summer.”

From where she stood, Tina could see the frown lines deepening on Bette’s forehead. She forced herself to stay back, ignoring the urge to stand beside Bette and face the former senator.

She took a deep breath. “Even without the latest development, I wouldn’t be able to go. I have Angelica to think about.”

“Could’ve brought her along, if you wanted to,” Barbara added matter-of-factly.

    1. Ah well… not what I was hoping for but…such is life. I did enjoy the beginning of this story and hoped that Barbara and Bette would make it. They are so powerfully sexy together. Damn!

    2. The end?? But… but… (I’m getting all quivery chinned) Ah well. At least Barbara took it very well. I guess a lot of this journey was for Bette to see that it was okay to try again, be it with or without Tina. She chose Tina (can’t say I’m displeased with that. I’m well pleased, actually). I’m sorry to see this end, but I really do hope you’ll be back with another story soon, be it a sequel, or another tale. Thanks sky, and from a Pens fan, I’ll just say congrats. cheers!

    3. Thanks for a wonderful story! You had me worried for a while there, but you pulled them together in the end. Loved your examination of their relationship and hope to read more from you soon. Congrats to your Red Wings!
