    Cure-all, Chapter 17

    CHAPTER 17

They were settled near the big stoned fireplace just like the previous evening, but everything had changed… Bette was in the house.

The fire crackled in the hearth, the sweet aroma of kirsch crepes being prepared was subtly reaching out to them, and the atmosphere was nothing but warm and cosy.

During dinner, the conversation had been light-hearted and flowing easily. Tina’s grandfather had been fascinated to hear about Bette’s work but also extremely impressed by her selfless devotion to research. They had talked about her numerous research expeditions and her work at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

Then the old man had told Bette all about his beloved region in France and how, when he was still a young boy, Alsace had been torn in the war. He had shared fascinating stories about his father who, after joining the resistance in 1940, had for years hidden their secret operations in the cave of the family glass factory. The same glass-factory that had been reduced to ashes toward the end of the war, destroying all of the family patrimony and heritage, except for a few valuable glasses they were drinking from tonight. Bette had admired the precious pieces and taken each sip with profound reverence.

He had also told her about his coming to America with his young wife, Anne, and how after the success of their first vintage, he had built Walheim to welcome the birth of Paul, their unique son and Tina’s father. At that point, Bette had glanced at Tina lovingly, silently worshipping the memory of the man who had brought her into this world.

"Do you know what ’Walheim’ means, Bette?" The old man had said, "It means ‘chosen house’. I gave it that name the day my son was born, because in that moment I realized that everything this house held was beautiful and true. And that it would always be… It was my way of thanking God for His blessings."

Then he had turned to Tina,

"And every time I look at my granddauther, I know that it was the right name for this house."

Bette had looked at Tina, and not taking her eyes from her, she had uttered, "I can only agree with you on this, Mr Kennard."

So now Tina was sitting on the edge of the huge fireplace with Mopsel in her lap, silently playing with him as she watched with amusement her grandfather open yet another bottle of Clos-Walheim for Bette to taste.

She couldn’t help but snort again as she reminisced about Katel’s misunderstanding of Bette’s identity. A thing she had been doing a few times during dinner as they had humored the old maid.
