The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Twenty-Eight

    Chapter Twenty-Eight
Helena’s breath had caught in her throat and her eyes were as wide as saucers. “So what did you say?” she asked Bette.

Bette pushed pieces of her baked potato around on her plate before meeting crisp blue eyes. “I shut down. I told her that I appreciated her honesty, but that I needed a little time to digest what she’d said.”

    “And then what?”

“She told me she understood and that she’d be as patient with me as I needed her to be. Then she went home.”

Helena was amazed at the most recent turn of events. “Okay. It’s been nearly twenty-four hours. How are you feeling now?”

Bette looked back down at her plate, processing her emotions. After Tina’s confession the previous evening, she’d begged for space and Tina had gone home alone. After trying in vain to reach Helena, Bette had spoken to Kit who’d talked her down off the ledge and gotten her to relax.

Bette Porter had spent many a cold, lonely night fantasizing about Tina coming back to her. About Tina wanting to love her again. And now that Tina had confessed to wanting to come back, Bette found herself quite surprised at the single most dominant emotion she now felt: anger.

They had wronged each other. That much had been apparent in their discussion. But she was boiling with anger and despite not wanting to feel that way, the anger was still there.

Helena had flown into town that afternoon. Bette had dropped off Angie with Tina before picking her up from the airport and they’d headed up the coast for the art show. Now they sat on the outdoor patio of a seafood restaurant, a blanket of night sky around them, the dark ocean rolling in the background.

“I’m still angry, Helena. I don’t want to be angry. But I am.”

Helena frowned and placed her hand on top of her companion’s. “Why?”

“I feel like a puppet on a string.”

    “Really?”

Bette nodded. “I know I can be a bitch.”

Helena smiled and replied sarcastically, “You?”

“I know I’m not always the most pleasant person to be around. I anger easily. I can put people off. I’m not afraid to speak my mind. And I’m a perfectionist. I’m strong-willed and decisive. It’s not always exemplary behavior, but it’s me.”

    1. MTS this story is brilliant! You writing is AMAZING! So please don’t feel offended by my next comment. Because it had nothing to do with your excellent writing. Bette used to do everything with so much passion, everything she does, when she’s angry, when she’s in love, making love, work etc. And in the last few chapters I think she misses that passion when it becomes to Tina. She’s almost ambivalent. When they come together at this point it’s a disaster waiting to happen. It’s not passionate. But as I said I love, love, love this story :)

    2. Loved, loved, loved this chapter. Bette’s rational side knows that they are both at fault, and that they hurt each other badly, but she needs to be angry at someone, and as Tina left her for Henry, its a normal reaction. When she cheated on Tina with Candace she was the pariah and now the roles are reversed. Also perfectly well understand her fear about losing Angelica, it was that fear that caused her to file for sole custody in the first place, Tina as the birth mother has all the rights and if and when she decides that she doesn’t want Bette to see Angie there is nothing much Bette can do about it. And Tina already once treated Bette to cut her off and start a family with Henry, who is to guarantee it will not happen again should Bette decide she will not get back together with Tina. Helena’s right they have to discuss this, and find a solution especially where Angie is concerned. Glad Bette called Tina and at least told her she hasn’t come to a conclusion yet, it shows she listened to Tina as well as Helena and at least doesn’t shut down completely to Tina. She is willing to keep communication open and that’s a good start, I would think. Thanks again for such an amazing story.

    3. STOP… why is Helena pushing Bette towards Tina? Temporary insanity? Are we looking at a Bette and Helena friends w/ benefits situation? I’m all for Bette and Tina co-parenting and getting along but Helena and Bette are so dynamic and would be a perfect match (and super hot). Great updates, pps!

    4. AH!!! I totally love this story and totally love that you are back on the site! I agree with azmama. I’d like to see a great friendship develop between them while keeping in mind that friends make the best lovers ;-) HOOZAH! Loves it!

    5. yes…things are coming together now. Helena makes a better friend and hopefully she stays in that category. I love the dialogue you have between Bette and Tina. I can feel the love and emotion coming from both characters. you have written a very intense love story. I love it..Thank you MTS

    6. People usually say one thing and do another but somehow I don’t see Bette that way. Dislike this chp because it’s fake, for me!! just my judgment;)It doesn’t go this way in real life and although I’m tibetter I’m not for them in this story. Dissapointed. But I’ll still follow because it’s great story no matter what:)

    7. I agree with modengo, I didn’t understand Bette in this chapter. I thought she was past her anger but apparently she’s still very self centered. I can understand that she didn’t like being a puppet on a string, no one does but as Helena reminded her it wasn’t Tina’s fault. She did this to herself out of guilt for being the cheater and she forgot that she treated Tina like a puppet for years, telling her off by asking her to go and breastfeed Angie or solely deciding to shorten their outings because she disagrees with some people’s behavior of for business reasons. One thing I liked in Jodie on the show is that she refused to go along with Bette in that matter even if sometimes the latter was right! Why is she forgetting that Tina’s momentary thought of denying her the paternity of Angie was a reaction to her filing for sole custody? It seems to me that this Bette is wallowing in self pity, mourning the ideal image she had of herself and acting like a child who doesn’t know what they want. It makes me feel sorry for her and for Tina who hopefully, in her maturing process, will learn that sometimes putting boundaries is the good thing to do, especially when confronted to a control freak like Bette. Read you soon.

    8. i would rather bette find romance elsewhere – outside helena, if she doesnt want to be with tina for now. Bette and Helena’s chat reminds me of some heartfelt chats i have with platonic friends so i do believe there is a place for friends without romance for belena. Belena would just be messy to the entire equation and i would be disappointed if they end up together. It is like saying cant there just be something called friendship? And at this stage, I would also rather see bette explore outside tibette instead of forcing herself to be with tina since she isn’t 100% into Tina. Tina will just need to learn to deal with it maturely. If they truly love each other, they will find a way back to be together…..As for the adoption, wow, it’s an honest admission from Bette but hearing bette say that tina might deprive her of the legal adoption of their child after what they have gone through shows how little she thinks of tina. Even Helena is a better judge of Tina’s character as a co-parent. if i were tina, i would be so insulted and disappointed because bette should have learnt by now that the only reason why tina had such a thought before was really in retaliation and in defense to keep angie with her as well. don’t forget, bette ran off with angie after she filed for sole custody. Tina made mistakes but I don’t think she is fundamentally selfish as a co-parent or person.

    9. Helena turned out to be a very good friend, and i’m glad Bette and Tina are taking things slow, it will be better in a long run, when they get back together for good ;)

    10. Great update. Bette may not realize it but, she almost has the same kind of relationship with Helena as she had with Candace, without sex. Sitting and talking with Helena makes her relax and forget the strife she has and feels with Tina. She doesn’t have to be anything to or for Helena, she can just be herself, relaxed and calm. She doesn’t need the sexual relationship with Helena to be friends with her. And I don’t think Helena is looking for sex with her either. Neither of them has had a close friend that they can just talk with and share a meal with no strings attached. They use each other as a sounding board and that is all that’s required of the friendship. Wonder if they will think about this or discover it any time soon. Helena has all but said as much to Bette and that is how she is coming across to me. They each need to find sex elsewhere. For Bette, whether she admits it or not, the only person she wants sex with is Tina. I know some people want to see a Belena pairing. I don’t think it will happen, I sure hope not at least. Bette and Tina are doing the most important thing and that is talking about what happened to break them apart and what they are feeling now about all that. They are taking it slowly which is what it takes to solve all the problems and get them feeling at ease with each other again before any reconciliation can take place. Slow and easy is very important to people in a damaged relationship. I think they will eventually see the person they fell in love with begin to emerge and the love will follow. Loved the chapter. Thanks for posting.

    11. This chapter was a little reminiscent of S4 when Bette went to Tina to talk about Jodi. I can see Helena’s talk influencing Bette to give Tina another try almost against her will. I can also see it not working out and Bette turning back to Helena or Helena deciding she wants Bette for herself – so Belena could still happen. Can’t wait to see where you take us next time. Thanks for the frequent updates.

    12. Well, here’s my two cents…I hope that Bette and Helena stay just as friends, whether Bette and Tina get back together or not. The reason I say that is because I believe that we all need to have that one person we can hang with, who allows us to just be ourselves. Bette feels that with Helena. She calms her, but at the same time they can laugh and giggle together, have stimulating conversations, have common interests, etc. We all need that best friend/buddy that truly takes us as we are. Bette doesn’t really have that with anyone else, even with Kit. With Kit she also has to be a sister, which brings in other obligations…not to say you can’t be close to your sister. Anyway, I would just enjoy seeing these two women, especially Helena who has never enjoyed an authentic friendship, enjoy having a best friend where there are no sexual undertones. That is the most wonderful feeling. I have one of those…she is my soul mate and has been my best friend since 1982. I can’t imagine experiencing anything in life without sharing it with her…and no, we have never had sex. In fact she has been very happily partnered for 19 years. So, for romance, yes I am rooting for B&T, but I am truly rooting for Bette and Helena to be each others best friend. Thanks!
