My Teenage Dream – Chapter Two

Sometimes, It Really Isn’t A Joke

“Elisabeth Marie Porter, that isn’t funny.” Melvin said and I sigh.

“Dad, it wasn’t a joke.” I tell him.

“Are you serious?” Mom asks me and I nod.

    “I am.” I say.

“Do you… Are you… Err… involved with someone?” Mom questions.

    “No, I’m not.” I say.

“Stop, for a second. Elisabeth, this can’t be true. No one in the Porter family is gay. No one.” He says, sternly and I hear my sister laugh.

“Dad, why do you think Uncle Jay isn’t married? Because the man he lives with is not just a friend…” Kit says.

“Kathy, don’t say that.” Melvin told his daughter before turning to me again. “Elisabeth, I won’t allow it. You are not and will not be gay under my roof, do you understand?”

“I am sorry to tell you but I can’t help it. I am a lesbian and there is nothing that anyone can do to stop me from being gay. It’s impossible.” I tell my father and he groans.

    “I won’t accept it.” Melvin.

“Then you don’t. I can’t force you to love me, right?” I ask him, I try to cover up the hurt in my voice.

“You know I love you. I just want the best for you and being a lesbian is not the best way to live.” He tells me. “You are not gay.” He says sternly.

    “Yes, I am.” I say.

    “No, you aren’t!”

“Melvin, stop it.” My mother spoke up. “Betty, how do you know you are gay?”

“Because I am not attracted to boys at all and I have had crushes on girls more than once. I can’t even picture me being with man.” I tell my mother who nods.

    “Okay.” She says.

“Okay? What okay? This is not okay. You know what Elisabeth? I don’t want you here. I will not allow a lesbian in my house. You are a shame to this family and…”

“Melvin! Don’t you dare finish that sentence! Elisabeth is our daughter. You can’t say those things to her.”

“Yes, I can. This is my house and I will decide who can do what here.” He tells my mother.

“You know what? It’s okay. Maybe its better that I go away for a while.” I say and stand up. My sister stands up to.
