Jody’s voice swelled with the music. Her deep brown eyes were squeezed shut; her hands covered the headphones over her ears. Jody’s near black hair contrasted the fair, gentle skin of her face as it drifted over her shoulders. Her hips swung harder and harder with the intensity of the vocal. The slightest gravelly roughness of her voice emerged for the climactic verse:
No matter where we go, what we do
We can’t erase our past
And even though we’re apart
I need to keep you close to my heart
But, baby, the question is,
What about you?
As her voice descended into a whisper, Jody’s arms were clutched across her chest hugging herself. She didn’t open her eyes until she heard a voice.
”Holy shit. Holy living shit, Jody.” Bernie left the booth and was on his way into the studio.
”What have you been saving that for, sweetheart?” He was hugging her and slapping her on the back at the same time. ”You nearly busted a gut.” Jody felt her feet leaving the ground as she looked into the eyes of one of the sweetest men she had ever known.
”I have never heard anyone sing it from the gut like that. You kicked ass!” Bernie was still pumped, pacing like it was his first recording.
”Don’t EVER screw around with all of the tech toys again. No more synths, no more mixing, no more dubbing. You sing it straight, you record live, and you will never have to worry about studio time again.”
***************
Jody was still buzzed when she turned up the gravel road with the sign saying ”Spring Mill Veterinary Clinic and Kennel.” She looked at the clock on the dash of her Jeep. 4:30. Sharon was still with office visits. She parked in the driveway leading to the two car garage that was set away from her and Sharon’s 1850’s yellow colonial. The office was a separate converted barn only a few hundred feet from their house.
Jody parked her Jeep and went in the back door of the clinic. She found Sharon in the lab looking into a microscope.
