Late Night Dim Sum – Section 2-14
Gail shot him a dark look and scowled, ”What?” she said a little more sharply than she had intended.
”And all you can think about is your kids, and the beautiful woman you left in your bed that morning. And you wonder if you are ever going to see them again…” he continued.
”Oh,” Gail says, ”we’re talking about you.”
”Why?” He asked guilelessly, ”Who did you think we were talking about?”
She shook her head and pointed at him.
”So, anyway, after you are found, and everything is supposed to be ok, you wake up from a nightmare in the middle of the night, hoping your screams didn’t wake the neighbors.” He continued.
”Oh. Uh.. right…” She said, looking down at her cocktail.
”And you think about your friends and your family and wonder if they even know you anymore, and wonder if you will ever feel completely safe again… And then there are good days when things get better, and you have a girl who is crazy about you, and friends who you realize actually care…” He continued.
She tried to speak, but found that no words came out, so she simply reached over and touched his arm, a simple, heartfelt gesture that wasn’t lost on any of them. She looked up into his serious green eyes, but found she couldn’t hold his gaze.
”Hey! Are you going to eat that?” He reached over and snatched the half finished pork bun from Gail’s plate, breaking the hush that had fallen over their table.
She can’t help but to shake her head and laugh.
”Wow, these are good!” He said, chewing. ”You know, it’s good to talk about these things with someone you know understands.” He stopped inspecting his pilfered pork bun, and looked at her intently.
”Um, yeah, ” She responded cautiously, ”Yeah, I guess it does.” Her martini glass was resting between her hands on the table. For some reason, she couldn’t seem to take her eyes off of it. ”Thanks Oliver!” She heard herself speak in a voice so soft she wasn’t sure if she really said it out loud.
”For what Peck? Saving you from the horror of having to eat this delicious pork bun? Cuz you know I will always be glad to eat your food!” He laughed and nudged her under the table.
She looked up at him finally and smiled, ”I know you will Oliver. I know you will.
”Anytime Darlin’, any time.” He responded quietly, ”Now, who needs more of these dumplings?” he demanded, ”Well go on Peck! You’re buying!” He smiled as he sent her off to wait in line for another round.
