All Alone – (Chapter: The Day After)

“Hey Spence,” I greeted her placing my hand on her thigh.

“Hey Ash,” she almost sounded surprised. “Why aren’t you sitting with Aiden?”

“Because I want to sit with you,” I said reassuringly squeezing her thigh. Looking up, I saw Aiden sitting at our usual, his usual table. I corrected myself. He didn’t seem as light hearted as normally. I guess I have a tendency of breaking hearts, but in my defense this hurts me just as much as it hurts them…

“What are you thinking about?” Spencer asked looking up from her food and observing my facial expression. I just smiled to myself.

“How lucky I am that you’re my best friend.” This made her smile. She has a beautiful smile. “Spencer?” I asked after a brief silence, my voice taking a more serious tone.

“Yeah?” she replied almost waiting to be disappointed.

“Will go on a date with me tonight?” I asked blushing. I think I’m actually afraid that she’ll turn me down. Everyday I think I’m figuring out more and more what it feels like to be Spencer.

“I would love to Ash,” Spencer stated look up at me like she was caught of guard by the question. “I would really like that.”

“Ok, well it’s settled. After school I’ll drop you off, and I’ll be back in an hour to pick you up,” I said, trying very hard to hide how excited I really was. Of course the bell rang. Ugh, school ruins everything I sighed. “I’ll meet you at my car after school Spence,” I stated kissing her on the cheek. Once again I couldn’t help but watch her walk away. I could get used to this feeling. I already have…

After another three drawn out hours of class, I leaned up against my car waiting for Spencer. My eyes drifted from crowd to crowd trying to distinguish the face that would make my eyes light up. I could hear someone approaching. Aiden walked towards me, never once looking up at me. Silently he leaned up against my car next to me. His gaze just seemed to zone out into the mass of the student body.

“I always knew,” he said so calmly. I bit my lip, not expecting what I was going to hear.

“Everyday you watched her. You talked about her all the time. I always knew one day you would choose her.” I never said a word the whole time.

“When she moved here you changed, but for the better. I mean you quit the squad, stopped partying all the time, and spent practically every waking moment with this girl. Hell I think deep down everybody really knew. Everybody knew but you two. I always knew this was coming Ash,” he sounded so sad, but he didn’t sound angry.

“I’m not going to give you any trouble. I want you to know that. I want you to be happy, and if that means not being with you I’ll just have to man up and except that fact.” I couldn’t tell for sure, but I think he was crying.

“I never lied when I said I loved you Ashley, but I also never lied when I said I’d never intentionally hurt you.” Finding my voice I finally managed to speak up.

“I still want you around Aiden. You really are a great friend,” I stated the walls of everything I’ve ever known crumbling. This guys heart was broken because of me.

“I’ll be around Ash,” he assured me. “I’ll always be around.” Just as silently as he came, he straightened himself up and was about to camouflage himself with the faces of the crowd.

“I do love you Aiden,” I whispered just loud enough for him to hear. “I just love her…”

“I know. I love you too,” he stated before disappearing all together…
