Are You Happy Now? – (Chapter: Eight: Running)

    12:45AM Saturday, September 13, 2013

Finally tired of the silence and confused by the night’s events, Kate spoke up.  “You were dancing with THE Ashley Davies.  I can’t believe it.  Holy fuck is she hot, and that’s coming from a straight girl.  But, Spence, I don’t get it – why’d you run out of the club?”

Spencer sighed.  She turned her head from looking out the side window and stared straight ahead, then down at her lap where her hands were clasped together.  “Kate,” she paused and shook her head.  The alcohol swam through her head.  “Can’t.”

Kate turned left onto Crescent Heights.  “What?  What is it?”  Kate asked, glancing quickly at Spencer and then back at the road.  “Are you going to throw up?  Should I stop the car?”

“Can’t talk,” she said slowly, as not to slur the words together.

Kate glanced over at Spencer again and then she turned into their apartment complex’s garage.  “Okay, but I’m here when you want to talk.”

As they got out of the car, Spencer suddenly remembered her phone had vibrated ten minutes ago.  “Did you…me…text… at Trunks…when you…I mean…?”  She shook her head, trying to clear out the drunkenness.

“No,” Kate interrupted as they walked over to the stairwell.  “I saw you sprint out of the club and I followed you.”

“Huh,” Spencer replied absentmindedly as she dug her cell phone out of her pocket.  She flipped it open and clicked okay to view the message.

I’m getting off early tonight…actually now.  I’ll be at my apartment by one if you want to come over…

The words blurred together, but Spencer could comprehend enough of it.  She flipped the phone closed.

Spencer, after quickly showering to get rid of the club smell, changed into black silk pajama pants, a teal camisole tank top, and black flip flops.  She stumbled out onto the street, then turned south and stumbled twenty yards farther on Laurel Avenue.  Pausing here, she looked up at the apartment building, making sure it was the correct one.  Wrong one.  She staggered down the sidewalk a few more yards and came to the right building.  Wandering unsteadily up to the glass doors, she pulled on the handle, and then remembering, she shook her head.  Spencer took a few steps back and found the call box, entered in the four digit code, and pulled on the door handle which didn’t budge.  She entered the four digit code again, this time emphasizing each push of the button.  Finally, she heard the short buzz of the doors and yanked the door open.  A minute later she knocked on #104.
