    Bump bump bump bump… typical.

     

    “No, not outside, inside.” Ashley considered what she’d just said. “Ok, outside too but what I’m referring to is your insides. This isn’t very eloquent is it?”

    Spencer laughed. “It’s ok, you called me beautiful, that gets you off the babbling hook.”

     

    “Phew” Ashley got up and grabbed a squealing Elly out of her chair, tickling her as she went. “I think I’ll take this one for a clean up” Elly squealed delightfully, her face smattered with sauce. Spencer watched them giggle up the hall and sighed happily. This is how things were supposed to be. If only she could actually end the night with Ashley in her arms, in her bed, maybe her life would be perfect.

     

    She could. There was nothing actually stopping her.

     

    Except the future. The scary, scary future and ridiculously complicated life she had going on right now. Not only would it make things a million times more complicated, it also wouldn’t be fair on Ashley. And Gray probably wouldn’t react too well. He’d certainly smell a rat, even though, technically there wasn’t on. Oh, ok, one small indiscretion but that wasn’t the reason she’d left Gray. It was just something that happened. And something she desperately wanted to happen again. No, no, Ashley was right, they were better off as just friends. So much better off.

     

    These were her thoughts as Spencer loaded the dishwasher and cleared the table. By the time she was finished, her four year old was in pyjamas looking very pleased with herself, and even Ashley was grinning, although a little damp.

     

    “She threw the rubber duck at me” Ashley nodded seriously, she looked at her hands. “I don’t know how to sign that.”

     

    Spencer grinned and signed it slowly for her. “Why’d did you throw the duck at Ashley?” she signed back to her laughing daughter, while speaking for Ashley. She made an effort to keep her movements slow and obvious for the brunette, who copied them.

     

    “Cos she made it bite my stomach” Elly signed, much faster than Ashley could read. Spencer laughed with eyes sparkling and translated. As Elly picked up Mr. Ruffles and headed for her bedroom Spencer raised an eyebrow at Ashley.

    5. I like how I feel about this fic right now. I am comfortable.It seems that there has been a slight change in the force, young Skywalker. Up until now, Ashley had come off as a confident, “together” lady who happened to be falling in love with a good friend. Spencer was confused about her emotions all the while dealing with some serious life business.Now, I am sensing that Ashley has a lot more insecurities, and a seemingly darker past than had been revealed thus far. Spencer keeps alluding to her life being “complicated,” too complicated apparently, to persue a romantic relat. with Ashley. To me, that’s bullshit. Spencer’s “complicated” situation that is. These barriers and issues, for the most part, have been erected by Spencer to keep her from what she really wants. Now, yes, I fully understand the seriousness of this pregnancy, divorce…these are real life problems, and must be taken seriously…but if one really looks at the big picture, the waxing and waning of the romance between the two, could predictably cause more harm to the relat. than good. Swinging back to Ashley’s end of things, I have now determined that the barrier between the two is not Spencer, but Ash. Ash has never had a great track record nurturing a relat. with anyone it seems. She aluded to family and friends and lovers falling through the cracks, because she could never keep them going, whether out fear, laziness, or her own self destructive behaviors. She now as a wonderfully deep friendship that teeters on a fence of something much more. Ash must prove to herself that she can be “a friend;” that, she can be there for people and commit to all of it. This is the test. Right here. But, oh god, what is this?? She’s in love, falling, fell, splat on her face. Now the rules she has set up, the boundaries erected for herself and for Spencer are bending against the weight of uncontrollable emotions. This now demands a whole new set of boundaries, and Ashley has no idea, it seems, what the hell these would be. She is trying her best. And doing very well I might add. She stopped the passion from continuing, ceasing Spencer’s advances, when we all know it must have taken the willpower of a surviving POW.Spencer knows Ashley is for her. She knows that, really, there isn’t too much standing in the way. Gray and she are doing better than expected. He will be there for her…when he can. Yah, he’ll miss doctor apts, and put priorities elsewhere, but he is there. Mama Carlin has her issues. Spencer can’t allow these to dictate her life. No one can dictate her life. Spencer is starting to take the reigns and regain control for she and Elly. A few posts back Ash grumbled over bad timing. And yeah, the timing here isn’t great. But, yah know what, if it isn’t something, it’s another, and before you know it, years have past, time is lost, and regrets rise to the surface like a pingpong ball underwater.I am concerned for Ashley. Just a bit. But, I guess all this babble is to say, Sarah, that I see how you have created a more complex world with these women, and the onion is slowly but surely being peeled. Ash must prove to herself she can be mature, and harvest a relat. to full growth. She isn’t that naive, irresponsible, selfish woman in her early twenties that she once was. Her life is changing for the better. Spencer is no longer that shy, insecure housewife, ready to roll over and allow herself to be bulldozed by her mother, Gray, the check out lady who somehow turns the emotional tables on her guest,as Spencer fumbles nervously for that coupon she swore she put in her wallet, not sure if she is more embarrassed for holding up the line, or for the fact that she is allowing this woman to make her feel like she is nothing.They both have something to prove. To themselves. To their loved ones. To each other. This is vital to their existance, their personal needs to grow.When the time is right, they will know. The bullshit will be pushed to the sides, and their it will rest, patiently, and so utterly clear…that wonderful, beautiful almost tangible entity that connects two people who are in love.Yay for this fic!
