Changing For the Better – (Chapter: You can only go up or down staying neutral isn't an option)

“It was a good day dream.”

“Yeah, what was it about,” she asked raising her eyebrow. You.

“Um nothing interesting,” I shrugged playing her game. I can go along with this.

“Yeah, well than maybe I wont tell you about the dream I had the other night,” damn she’s good.

“And how do I know it just isn’t some random dream that I’m trading my precious thoughts for?”

“You don’t,” she winked. “But ah,” she whispered into my ear. “I wasn’t wearing any cloths.” Wait WHAT? She just laughed and started running down the shore line.

“Ashley wait up,” I screamed running after her as fast as I could.

“Better run faster than that Spency,” she shouted over her shoulder. But I was motivated now, and the gap between us grew smaller.

“Maybe you better speed up cause I‘m catching up.” My feet pounded harder into the sand, kicking up dust. Beads of sweat grew on my forehead.

My heart was beating so fast I thought it was going to come out of my chest. But I couldn’t tell if that was from the running or from imaging her dream…

By now I was only a few feet away from arms reach.

“Wait…” too late. She turned around unexpectedly and I crashed full throttle into her figure sending us tumbling downwards.

“Oof,” I cried out trying desperately to catch myself, but I just continued to descend. By the time I landed I was on the ground, and Ashley was underneath me.

“Spencer you’re so heavy,” she joked.

“Oh, next time a warning would have been good,” I laughed forgetting all the pain I should be feeling from the our bodies proximity.

“I clearly remember saying wait,” she giggled. It was a really sweet and genuine giggle. She always has this confident air to her. I like seeing this side of her.

“My bad,” I stated shifting to where I could look at her. “So about that dream.”

“You’re such a guy,” she laughed. “But I think it’s kind of cute.” When I looked in her eyes I saw something. I’m not sure what it was exactly, but deep down something told me it is what I’ve been searching a long time for. For once, everything just felt right. I didn’t feel like I had to be someone I wasn’t anymore. She’s the first person I feel like who’s ever really loved me for me.

“You’re beautiful,” it came out of my mouth before I had time to grasp what I was saying.

“I thought so too,” she smiled, and before I knew it my lips were on hers.

By the time she broke away I had the biggest idiotic grin on my face. I knew I did, but I also knew I couldn’t exactly stop grinning either.

“You’re a dork,” she laughed before trying to wiggle out from under me. “Spencer what have you been eating lately,” she joked unable to get up. But hey I really didn‘t want her getting up.

“I’m a growing girl,” I replied trying to sound hurt. It didn’t work, so I sat up enough so Ashley could move.

“Yeah, growing in width,” Ashley snickered moving to a sitting position.

“You’re just jealous cause your metabolism sucks.”

“Yeah shut up,” she stated attempting to defend herself.

“Don’t worry I’ll still like you when you weigh five hundred pounds,” I exaggerated with my hands.

“Yeah,” she replied with a faraway sound in her voice. “Spence?” I could tell from her sudden change of tone that this was going to be something important to her.

    “Yeah?”

“Do you ever, um do you ever think about us?”

“All the time,” I stated truthfully.

“Me too…” Her voice died off. “You know the last time I was here at this spot was when Kyla showed up and everything felt like it was falling apart.”

“This place means a lot to you doesn’t it?”

“Yeah, but so do you,” she replied turning to face me. “Spencer,” she stated picking up my hand and playing with it. “Do you love me?” Love, love is such a meaningful term. Do I love her? Every fiber of my being was screaming the answer at me. I knew the answer to this question. It’s the only thing I’ve been sure of in a long time…

“Yes,” I whispered so delicately that even the cold night air seemed to soften.

“I feel like I’ve been meaning to ask you this for awhile,” she giggled nervously. “But um Spencer will you be my girlfriend?”
