Chimera – (Chapter: Surprise Surprise)
‘Police refuse to offer anymore details on the case, though one source within the department who wished to remain anonymous has stated that the FBI has been brought in on the case along with the DEA.’
Double the fun.
The phone rang just then and she reached over to pick up her cordless as she flipped to the World section with a sigh. “Hey.”
“Hey yourself rockstar.” The voice on the other end laughed lightly. “Have you checked the news lately?”
She couldn’t help but smile at the pet name. “I’m reading the Times right now.”
“You did some good work there.”
The brunette gave an uneasy chuckle when she heard the faint sound of pounding coming from downstairs. “Thanks Kelly but there’s a bit more going on then what the news is saying.”
“What did you do?”
She hated that tone, the annoyed one Kelly would get whenever she told her about last minute developments. “You need to promise me that you’ll stay calm.”
“You do realize you just made me more anxious by saying that.”
“Whatever. Anyways, when I was doing the job I ran into a little snag that could be very lucrative for the both of us in the end.” She explained before finishing off the rest of her drink.
The sound from the basement was coming intermittently with rapid taps, almost like knocking. She figured it could wait until she was done with her conversation.
“Ashley, snag and lucrative rarely if ever equate in our line of work.”
How unfortunately true. “Well maybe we can be the exception.”
“Just tell me what the fuck is going on.”
She couldn’t help but sigh. There was no strategic way she could tell her without a full on flip-out occurring. So, in true Ashley fashion, she opted for downplaying it as much as possible. “I might have taken on an extra package while unloading the other.”
“Who?”
“CPC daddy’s little princess.” She mumbled.
“SPENCER FUCKING CARLIN?!”
With the phone a good foot away from her ear she could hear the combination of curses and insults being flung at her over the telephone. Kelly must have used every epithet from the sailor’s cursing dictionary and some creative arrangement of words because Ashley was staring at the receiver with a little amusement.
