Coming Undone – (Chapter: Ten – Lovers and Friends)

The bartender quickly poured Ashley the shot she requested and she downed it quickly in turn, requesting another.  “What are you doing here?” Ashley asked, deciding not to beat around the bush.  She licked the corners of her mouth as the burnt wood taste filled her throat.

                    “Um…I was invited, remember?”

“Yeah, I remember,” Ashley downed the second shot just as easily as she had the first.  “But why did you actually come?”

                    “Are you suggesting something?”

                    “Yes.”

Spencer raised an eyebrow.  “Which is?”

“I think you enjoy fucking with me.”

Spencer narrowed her eyes and her head fell to the side.  “Ashley, get over yourself.”

Ashley smiled and her eyes twinkled wickedly.  “So you mean to tell me,” Ashley looked quickly for Gia to make sure we wasn’t in viewing distance and took a step closer to Spencer, “that you came her without any hidden agenda.”

Spencer’s heart started to beat faster as the space between her and Ashley closed, but she held her ground.  “That’s exactly what I’m telling you.”

“And you feel nothing when you look at me.”

“Right.” Spencer swallowed the lump in her mouth.

“And that when I do this,” Ashley leaned into Spencer with the pretense of reaching for the napkins that were behind her, her thigh finding its home between the blonde’s legs, “you feel nothing,” Ashley whispered.

Spencer’s breath hitched and her eyes fluttered shut.  “N-n-nothing,” she stammered.

Ashley leaned back and opened the space between them again.  “At least it’s good to know I’m not the only one hurting.”

Spencer stared blanking at Ashley, blinking her eyes as if she thought the picture might change.  She couldn’t get her thoughts together.  She watched as a sudden sadness washed over Ashley, her cocky smirk fading.  She wanted to reach out and caress Ashley’s face, whisper that she misses her everyday, and how she wishes they could just turn back time…or fast forward to where they get back together.  But Spencer couldn’t tell the future and it wasn’t just their hearts on the line anymore; they risk breaking four hearts now.

                    “Ashley…”

“No, don’t explain.  I shouldn’t have…”  Ashley shook her head and started to walk away, but felt Spencer’s hand holding her back.

                    “I do miss you.”

                    “Happy Birthday Gia!”

Gia beamed from ear to ear; she was having a wonderful time.  “Thanks.”

“I can’t believe Ashley Davies is here.”

                    “Yeah, that’s my…”

“And Spencer Carlin?!  I thought they broke up.”

                    “What?”

The friend looked at Gia as if she had four heads.  “Ashley Davies and Spencer Carlin used to date…I thought they broke up but I guess are still dating.” She nods her head over to the bar, and Gia follows her gaze.

Spencer had just stopped Ashley from walking away and said something that Gia couldn’t hear.  She watched as Ashley dropped her head and slipped her fingers from Spencer’s and walk over to where Kyla was also watching them.  Spencer’s hand fell back into her lap and she looked longingly at Ashley before looking down into her drink.
