    She was on the fast ride to hell herself.

     

    Arguing that she needed to get her head out of where it was, and her mind onto something else, Spencer headed into town. Her mother hadn’t paid much attention. Spencer gave some excuse about having extra work, and that she wouldn’t be home again. Then she set off.

     

    ‘I’m just going to church. To the church. To pray, to pray that god will take this out of me. That god will cure me. That god I hope I see her again… No! No NO NO! You are going to forget about this.’

     

    Ok, Spencer could probably get used to having feelings for girls. A girl anyway. It was only one at the moment. But having feelings for a fast talking space ship captain who clearly walked on the shady side of the line of the law? Or for that matter, a girl who was going to be out of town god knows how soon? That was just stupid. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

     

    So why had Spencer walked all the way to town with her mind on nothing and no one else?

     

    ‘Fuck!’ The uncharacteristic profanity in her head should have told her that nothing was going to succeed in getting Ashley out of her head today.

     

    She headed to the hospital, her brain fuming and her thoughts somewhere else. So much so that she barreled straight into Thom in the main corridor without seeing him.

     

    He reached out two hands on her shoulders to steady her and she nearly recoiled from the touch.

     

    “Whoah, Spencer, watch yourself.” He said.

     

    For some reason all Spencer could see was the sunlight glinting off the bald patch on the top of his head.

     

    “Sorry Thom, I was off in another part of the universe.”

     

    “Oh we all day dream,” he said jovially, waggling his eyebrows in a way he clearly thought made him look hilarious, but really made him look pathetically silly. “You’re mighty early aren’t you.”

     

    “I was heading to the library,” Spencer lied smoothly.

     

    “Oh.”

     

    “Spencer.” The sound was soft and floated to Spencer’s ears like molasses on the wind. Deep, sweet and comforting. She didn’t have to turn around to know who was speaking. Thom’s head came up to great the stranger addressing his colleague. Spencer turned around.
