    Give Up – (Chapter: Repost)

I lean forward and place my elbows on my knees interlacing my fingers. For a spilt second I think of all the ways I could turn this around and say something to make him feel stupid. Instead I just smile and him and let out a light chuckle turning my head to face the desk in front of me.

Out of the corner of my eye I see his mouth open and close. He opens his mouth again but before he can get a word out the wooden door near me swings open and Mr. Nixon quickly enters, shouting over his shoulder:

“Linda make sure you fax those files directly to Johnson in SV.”

He gives both Cooper and I the once-over and closes the door behind him and proceeds to sit in the leather chair behind his desk. After placing both hands on his desk he clears his throat and I know that he intends to give a speech rather than just saying which one of us will have the pleasure of getting out of this shit hole.

“I’m assuming you both know why you’re here?” I nod slightly and Cooper lets out an overeager “Yes Sir”
I stifle a laugh and try to focus on whatever else Nixon has to say.

“We all know that the two of you are the best in the county. So its no surprise that you each have an extremely high conviction record. But lets face it we live in Lander, Nevada and the crime here is kiddie stuff compared to the work you did on the McLean case. I think both of you could do a lot more good in a bigger city with real criminals.”

By now Cooper is sitting on the edge of his seat nearly drooling. Nixon looks between the two of us and as he begins speaking he keeps his gaze fixed on Cooper.

“Now there are two promotions an opening as a detective in SV and the position in Narcotics. I’ve gone over both of you case files repeatedly, looked at all your recommendations, and analyzed you in general…” Nixon looks my way and exhales deeply as if he’s still considering who should get what position.

“Davies pack your bags, your going to California.”
