Kidnap My Heart – (Chapter: 6: Books and Surprises)
"Excuse me," Kyla asked the grey haired woman at the customer service area of Barnes and Nobles, "do you have books on camping?" I can’t believe we’re at a bookstore on how to camp, we could’ve just Googled it.
"Ky, is this really necessary to be here?" I asked with my arms folded. I could be with Spencer right now.
"This is our first time camping…We need to be prepared." Kyla explained.
"You mean, you need to be prepared. I’m just gonna go with the flow." The grey haired lady returned with a few books and handed them to Kyla. We thanked her and headed to the moderately busy check out line. "You’re seriously going to read all these books? Are there even pictures in them?" Who doesn’t like books with pictures in them? I asked Kyla while we were walking back to the car.
"You’re being so sassy right now. Is it that time of the month?" She started the engine and we began our journey home.
"No, I’m sorry. Mom called me today and she was being extra bitchy. You just received my irritation due to our mother." I do take my irritations out on Kyla sometimes, but she knows I love her to pieces.
"I got a missed call from her earlier, totally forgot to call her back. What’d she want anyway?" We were stopped at a red light and the guys in the silver Mercedes next to us tried to get our attention. Ew, gross.
“She’s coming in a couple days and she just wanted to know if we were still alive.” Kyla’s speeding in a 25 mph zone. My hair is going to be so wild.
“Oh lovely.” I hear the sarcasm in Kyla’s tone. Why was our mom coming home anyway? What could she possibly want?
Kyla and I arrive home with me carrying the books she bought, I don’t know why and we hear a noise coming from the kitchen.
“Ash,” Kyla whispers while holding onto my arm, “did someone break in?” I drop the books on the glass coffee table and see the person whom Kyla thought was a burglar.
“Hello ladies.” All of sudden I felt as if my ears heard nails on a chalkboard or someone scratching a vinyl record. It was our mother, wearing dressy black pants, a white top, and a black blazer. Black was always our mother’s color. She always looked like she was going to a funeral with the amount of black she wears.
“It’s nice to know the place hasn’t burned down yet.” She gives Kyla and I stern but cold stares.
“I thought you said you were coming home in a few days.” Kyla refutes.
“Change of plans.” My mom pours herself a glass of red wine. “Well, what do you girls have planned this week?”
Kyla answers with her eyes pacing between the black and white marbled floor and my mom’s cold eyes, “We’re going camping with our neighbors.”
“Who you wouldn’t know about since you haven’t been home.” I added with the sound of annoyance.
“Don’t worry Ashley, I’m leaving in a few days so you can make our home the playboy mansion again.” She heads up the stairs into her room with the wine glass half empty.
“Gosh she’s so annoying,” I complain to Kyla as I pick up her books.
“At least she’s leaving soon, again” Kyla says trying to remain optimistic. I carry the books to Kyla’s room and I go into mine to let off some steam to Spencer.
“I hate how she can walk in here and think she’s an authoritative parent.” I yell into the phone. I love that I can vent to Spencer about anything, she just listens to my daily ramblings.
“She’ll be out of your hair soon” Spencer tells me to calm me down.
“Not soon enough. Oh, did I tell you me and Kyla went to Barnes and Nobles today to get books on camping?”
She giggles, “How’d that go?” Gosh, her giggle.
“Let’s just say it’s gonna be an interesting weekend.” I say smirking.
