    Ashley nodded. “I was going to ask if they could stay here tonight…” she began. Elly’s hands clutched at her shoulder and arm. The little girl still had her head buried in Ashley’s neck and was hiccoughing the noises that you make when you’ve just cried your heart out and you find it hard to breathe. She hadn’t heard Ashley but it was enough. “But I think Elly should, at the very least, come home with me.”

     

    Gray nodded this time. “I think she’d be beside herself if you left her here.”

     

    Ashley stroked the little blonde head on her shoulder. “I was going back to the hospital but…”

     

    “Arthur will be there all night. He’d call if anything… if she woke up.”

     

    So Gray was being purely positive too.

     

    “I don’t think I’ll send her to school tomorrow,” Ashley said. “She’ll want to see Spencer.”

     

    “Is that such a good idea?” Gray recoiled at the idea.

     

    “No, it’s a terrible idea,” Ashley said softly. “But I don’t think she’ll let us get out of it. I know Elly, she can be incredibly stubborn when she wants to. I wouldn’t put it past her to get on a bus and find her own way to the hospital if we don’t take her.”

     

    “I’m taking the rest of the week off work,” Gray said. “I’ll swing by tomorrow morning and we can go in. Did you want to leave Alex here?”

     

    Ashley shook her head. “No, we’re a family. We should stick through this together.”

     

    Gray nodded again, swallowing.

     

    “Gray?”

     

    “Yeah?”

     

    “You’re family too.”

     

    He smiled gently. “Thanks. I know.”

    “Do you have any idea who she is?” Madeleine asked with urgency and fury. “Are you fucking crazy? Do you two have some kind of suicide wish I don’t know about?” She was angry and there was no mistaking it. Her brunette curls shook with each word and her lips went from full and moist to a thin line, then back again. Spencer, despite her racing pulse, was quick enough to detect a hint of southern Europe in her tone; Spanish perhaps.

     

    Jean-Luc looked mildly dismayed, “Well… we… there…”
