That night he’d collapsed into Spencer’s bed, exhausted in every way imaginable, and had even managed to fall asleep. He didn’t even have nightmares. In fact, there were no dreams at all, it was just deep, black, sleep.

Glen was startled when he felt the hand of his father on his shoulder, pulling him away from his thoughts and back into the hospital room where he stood. “Glen, your sister asked you how you were.” Arthur spoke, looking concerned for his son as he carefully studied his face.

“Oh… I’m fine…” He answered, and although he’d been staring at his sister the entire length of their visit, for the first time since he’d entered the room, he really looked at her. Compared to a week ago, before Sarah died and everything got 1,000 times more complicated, she was hardly recognizable. She’d lost weight, color, energy, and apparently at some point, the will to live too. How much loss can one person handle before they have nothing left to lose?

“You look pale.” Spencer spoke, frowning a bit. Glen found the statement painfully ironic, and couldn’t smother the little chuckle that emerged from his lips.

“Well isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black.” He spoke, eliciting a smirk from his sibling. It was the kind of moment that only two people who’ve been through a really dark moment together can share. And, even though the distance between them was so great, and the circumstances so strained, Spencer and Glen had never felt closer.

“When’s the funeral?” Spencer spoke out of the blue, catching the attention of everyone around her, “For Sarah.” She clarified after a moment, rolling her eyes softly although no one caught the gesture.

“Oh don’t worry yourself with-” Paula began, although Arthur gestured for her to stop. If Spencer wanted to know, she deserved to know.

“Two days.” He spoke, glancing over at his sons as if expecting them to offer up some wise words. He was barking up the wrong tree.

“Will I be released by then?” She questioned next, her voice soft and low as she stared over their shoulders at the clock. Even though she’d just woken, she was anxious to get out of here. She hated hospitals. They housed absolutely nothing but bad memories.

“Well, the doctor said that if there are no more complications, you should be out by tomorrow.” The way they were addressing the topic, it felt like a prison sentence. But, that was how it felt, and Spencer gave a small nod of understanding. No matter how conflicted, angry, abandoned, hurt or upset she was with Sarah, she wouldn’t miss her funeral. Hell, she still loved the girl. Looking up at her family, she once again felt her lids begin to grow heavy. One of them mentioned something about the doctor saying that she should try and stay awake, but the overwhelming urge to sleep was too strong to resist any longer. She’d deal with the rest of her problems in the morning.
