Chapter 9-The Resignation
Annabelle is taken to her new dorm room where she puts her stuff down and smokes a cigarette outside of the door. Her new roommates look at her with disgust and they head out the door. She then goes inside her room and lays down on the bed looking at the ceiling.
(1 month later)
Graduation. The girls are all by the fountain in the back of the campus and they are wearing their caps and gowns. Simone is walking around congratulating everyone as are Father Harris, Sister Claire, and Sister Immaculata.
Annabelle and Simone glance at each other from a distance and slowly turn away. Everyone is enjoying the celebration with their parents and talking amongst themselves.
Simone leaves the celebration and returns to her room to get the letter of resignation that she wrote for Sister Immaculata. She takes one last look at her room to capture a final memory. She then takes her letter to Sister Immaculata’s office and sets in on her desk. She places it there slowly and keeps her hand on it for a couple of seconds.
Annabelle grabs her stuff and heads to her car. She stops at the gas station to get cigarettes and a lighter. She sits on the hood of her car and smokes a cigarette watching the cars drive by.
Simone gets in her car, takes one final look at the school and passes the gas station seeing Annabelle there. She pulls up bedside her car.
They smile at each other.
Simone: Do you mind if I join you?
Annabelle: I thought you didn’t smoke.
Simone: I just started when I met you.
They both laugh and Simone nudges Annabelle’s shoulder. Simone looks at Annabelle.
Simone: Let’s get out of here.
They laugh and get into Simone’s car. Simone places her hand on top of Annabelle’s as they drive away together.
