Out of sight, Out of mind
Thunder roared in the dark sky and interrupted what I was doing.
I look out of the window of my bedroom to get glimpse of the rain and I suddenly recalled the first day of a new school year when I met Spancer. Spencer Carlin, my best friend and the only person I’ve ever loved and care for.
It was also raining so I was late for school because of the heavy traffic. When I rushed into the unfamiliar classroom, everyone was properly seated in their seats. Spencer, sitting in the corner, looked up. She smile shyly at me as I walked past and asked me if I wanted to sit next to her.
Normally, I’d ignore her just like everybody else in the last school year. But there was something about her that kept me from walking pass her. So I took a seat next to her. From that day onwards,
we become best friends.
It was amazing how we could be friends so fast and how fast I could fall for her. We did everything together.
We stayed up really late at night and talked endlessly on the phone without even feeling bored.
When one of us needed help, the other would always be there. We’re inseparable.
One unexpected day, she came up to me at my house and told me that she would be going abroad to study next week. Tears immediately welled up my eyes. I had never thought this would actually happen. She hugged me tightly for the last time and and reassured me that no matter how, we would still be friends.
"Ash, don’t cry babe. I’ll write to you as often as I could and make sure you know the lastest news about me," she said cheerfully as she wipped my tears with her thumb, trying to hide the sadness that she was feeling.
She kissed me on my lips before she left, our first and last kissed. Tears immediately rolled down my face, I ran to my bedroom and cry myself to sleep.
At first, I really thought our friendship would not be changed in any way. We sent letters and pictures to each other nearly every week. We told each other what happen to us each day, our friends, and more importantly, how we missed each other.
But at some point, neither of us got the ball to tell how we feel for each other.
However, those letters become fewer until we just stopped writing to each other. Maybe both of us were busy with our studies or somehow both of us knew that we were now having a different life of our own. But how could a deep friendship end like this? I don’t even have a chance to tell her ‘I love her‘.
There is a saying ‘out of sight, out of mind’. I guess it is true after all.
