Past Revisited – (Chapter: 6-Back to NYC)
“So?”
“So, her dad left the house to both her and I. And I called in contractors to do some work on the house. And now she’s kind of here, in New York.”
“You brought her back with you?”
“Yeah, am I stupid?”
Mark shook his head, “You’re not stupid, and you just need to figure out what exactly she means to you.”
“That’s just it. I know what she means to me. She was the love of my life. She still is. I’m just waiting on her to figure out what I mean to her.”
“Why don’t you write her a song?”
“I have. I just haven’t told her that they’re about her.”
“Well, write her one. Make it worth while. Maybe when she hears it, it’ll stir something back up inside of her.” Mark stood up, “And if I were you, I’d use what you were just playing on the piano a few minutes ago.”
I watched him leave and then I turned back on the piano and started playing again. The music was there I just needed lyrics.
I sat for another four hours in the studio coming up with lyrics. I thought that I had it pinned. I wanted to perform it for Spencer. I just had to get her out of the house tonight to do it. Hopefully Mark’s idea would work. I headed home at around 4:30. It was a lot later than usual for me. I opened my apartment door and sat my purse down on the end table, “Hey Spence, I’m home.”
“Hey, I’m in here getting ready.”
I turned around and walked to where I thought I heard her voice coming from. Sure enough it was the bathroom, “Getting ready?”
Spencer was putting on her mascara, “Yeah, Kristin and I are going out to dinner.”
“You and Kristin? I was stunned.
“Yeah, she called me and asked if I would like to go out to dinner. I told her sure. You weren’t home yet and I thought that you might have a late recording session or something.” She looked at me and must’ve seen the disappointment in my eyes, “Is that okay? If you don’t want to be alone I can call her and tell her that you’re coming with us.”
“No, no it’s fine. Go, have a great time. I have some songs to work on anyways.” I walked out of the bathroom door way an into my bedroom, shutting the door behind me. Damn it all to fucking hell. Why? Why now?
Spencer knocked on my door, “Hey, I’m leaving. You want me to pick anything up for you on my way back? I should be home early. We have dinner reservations at six so hopefully I’ll be back by nine.”
“No, I have some stuff in the kitchen. I’ll just fix myself something or order some Chinese or something.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive. Now, you’d better get going you don’t want to keep your date waiting.”
Spencer’s frown gave way to a smile, “Ash, it’s not a date.”
“Uh-huh, that’s what you said when we were in high school.”
Spencer shook her head, “You never forget the corny moments do you?”
“Never. Now, go, and have a good time. I’ll see you when you get back.”
“Alright.” Spencer walked to the apartment door, “Bye, Ash.”
“Bye, Spence.”
And just like that she was gone for the night. Why couldn’t things just go as planned for once in my life? I had this all planned out. I had just written a beautiful love song and the girl that it’s all about just walked out the door to have dinner with my ex-roommate. Just like my life, it’s always about the drama.
