Seize the Day – (Chapter: Chapter 1)

“Whatever.” Ashley muttered. “It doesn’t matter anyway.” She turned her attention back to the window, and closed her eyes. “Just two years.” She murmured.

“What was that?” Karen asked, not hearing the last part of what Ashley said.

Ashley answered while keeping her eyes closed. “I said just two more years, right? And then I get my inheritance money?”

Karen nodded her head slowly. “When you turn 18 you do get your parent’s money, and the rest of their belongings.” She paused. “But maybe you’ll like it here enough to consider staying with your grandparents.” She offered hopefully.

Ashley snorted. “I don’t think so.” Karen frowned. “After two years is up, I’m back in Cali.” She stated firmly.

Karen continued driving in silence. She prayed that Ashley would change her mind somewhere in the near future. She knew what kind of trouble an 18 year old millionaire could get into in a city like LA, especially with trying to deal with the death of her parents. Karen sighed again, and hoped Ashley wouldn’t be stupid enough to get into drugs, if she did move back to LA. She mentally shook her head, ridding herself of her horrible thoughts, Ashley is better than that. She continued telling herself.

Ashley closed the car door, and looked at the small house in front of her. The barn is bigger than this house. She snorted. The tool shed is bigger than this house. She shook her head in disgust, and started walking up the rocky driveway with Karen at her side.

Karen knocked on the door twice, and waited patiently for someone to answer. She looked over at Ashley, who was standing next to her looking like her normally stoic self, and wondered how she feeling about meeting her grandparents.

The door slowly opened, and a woman in her early 60’s stood at the door way, with a huge smile on her face. “Well this must be little Ashley.”

Karen smiled at the woman’s enthusiasm. “Yes.” She turned her attention to Ashley. “Ashley Davies, this is your grandmother, Helen Daniels. Helen Daniels this is your granddaughter Ashley Davies.”

Ashley looked at the older woman with a puzzled expression. She looked nothing like her or her father. There must be some kind of mistake. She thought. She doesn’t even have our last name! She looked over at Karen. “Um, Are you sure we’re related?” She asked bluntly.
