Ashley: “What?” I say trying to hold back my laughter.

Spencer: “I think we already knew that.”

Christine: “I just found out.” that makes us laugh harder. “But that’s not my news. I just thought it’d lighten the mood.” she chuckles.

‘Lighten the mood’ ? Crap! She’s going to tell me something bad.

Ashley: “Oh my God mom are you sick?” I ask afraid.

Christine: “What? No…I-”

Spencer: “Should I go?”

Christine: “No it’s ok Spencer. This is something you should probably know too.” Now I’m really worried.

Christine: “I’ve been dating someone.” I feel the blood drain from my face. “His name is Mark, and I invited him over for dinner tonight.”

Ashley: “You can’t be serious.” I say not believing her.

Christine: “I am serious. He has a son and he’s bringing him for dinner too.”

Ashley: “What about dad?”

Christine: “Ashley, you’re father’s been gone for 15 years now. I’m tired of being alone.”

Ashley: “But-”

Christine: “No buts Ashley. I’m seeing this guy, he’s really great. I’m sure you’ll like him once you meet him.” and she leaves me and Spencer.

She’s dating someone? It’s probably nothing serious, it’s just a fling. I must have been out of it for a while because…

Spencer: “Are you gonna be ok?” she asks sounding worried.

Ashley: “Yea…I’m fine.” I think.

DINNER:

So Spencer and I are dressed up. I really don’t know why we had to dress up, this guy isn’t going to be around long. My mom will probably date him for a few days and leave him. Anyway, Spencer and I are hugged up on the couch watching TV waiting for what’s his name is to get here. Arthur’s stetting the table while my mom attempts to cook. At least she has Paula helping her because my mom can’t boil water. The doorbell rings and my mom rushes from the kitchen.

Christine: “Come on Ashley, I want you to be at the door with me.” I sigh and get up following her to the door, holding Spencer’s hand behind me.

Christine: “Ok, are you ready?”

Ashley: “Yes mom, can we please just get this over with?” she gives me that look, you know, the annoyed mom look.

Ashley: “Sorry.” I mumble.

I pull Spencer in front of me, wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin on her shoulder. She settles into me and I kiss her cheek. My mom opens the door and we see a tall guy, with low cut brunet hair. He’s wearing a suit and those dressy shoes. This guy looks uptight, fixing his neck tie.

Christine: “Ashley, Spencer this is Mark Gammon. Mark this is my daughter Ashley and this is her girlfriend, Spencer.”

Mark: “Nice to meet you two.” he smiles and steps forward just a little, kissing my mother which just about makes me throw up my dinner when we haven’t even eaten it yet.

Mark steps into the house. My arms fall from Spencer and the blood drains from my face as he reveals…

Mark: “This is my son-” before he can say anything I blurt out.

Ashley: “Asshole?!”

Jake: “Hot lesbian chicks?!” he says excitedly.
