    Standing In A Crowd – (Chapter: 11)

Spencer waited franticly for her Dad to arrive home. Her insides were in turmoil in thinking about her father. The thought of losing his support made her nearly faint. He had been her rock, the only reason she was able to make it through moving to L.A., falling for Ashley, and so many other things. Her mom had to be lying because this was not the dad she knew.

Her nerves had outgrown the pacing in her bedroom and commissioned her to move outside to the bench in her front lawn. That bench had been a refuge for many in the Carlin household either to get away from something or to wait for something. For Spencer today, it was both. She looked down at the blades of grass mindlessly counting each one. A task that was never ending, but kept her mind off of the possible pain and disappointment to arrive. There was so much at stake to be lost. Useless facts like the number of grass blades next to her foot seemed soothing to her. Her counting was disturbed by the sound of a car approaching her driveway. It was him. She sat up from her slump looking at him. He parked and turned off the car watching Spencer through the glass. She saw him take a deep breath as if preparing for the difficult questions that he was going to have to answer. Grabbing his brief case from the passenger seat, he opened the door.

Spencer intently looked at her dad in the eyes trying desperately to read him. Yet, his face was blank and actually seemed a little fearful. Before she could speak, he sat next to her on the bench. What was the first thing that she would say? As she opened her mouth to speak, a flood of emotions surrounded her.  Before she knew it, she was crying.

“I’m sorry,” Spencer said. “I’ve been waiting here to talk to you and here I am crying”. Spencer wiped her tears surprised that her dad didn’t reach to hug her.

“Your mother has talked to you hasn’t she?”, Arthur said.

“Dad, please tell me it’s not true. What about all the doing what’s right? And when you said that everything was going to be okay?”, Spencer questioned.

    3. Happy Holidays and thanks for the post. I had to work today so, I’m bummed out and tired. I love Arthur anyway. I was surprised before when he walked out and locked the door. It’s more realistic that he questioning whether or not he did the right thing. Because as cool as Arthur is, Spencer is his one and only little girl. Daddy doesn’t need to hear his daughter squealing or see her her ass out of the bed. Poor Arthur, that probably scared the fuck out of him. If I had an adorable daughter who was nothing but a pure angel to me and saw that, I’d kill that person. Points for mentioning the double standard (if it were a guy, I’d beat him) Ashley really did get lucky. But, sending Spencer away?! Yes, Ashley has turned her into a sex feen but, at least she’s growing and discovering herself (and Ash). Arthur you’re a psychologist, right? You should know she’s developing right on time.
