Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 8: Ashley)

As everyone was leaving the dance chaos erupted.  We lived in LA so gunshots were nothing new to us.  Our reactions were instantaneous as the shots echoed.  I spun myself in front of Cass so we were facing eachother.  As we were falling to the ground I felt something punch my left shoulder and I heard Cass start gasping.

I watched Cass die in my arms that night.  The last things she said was that she would love me forever and to tell her parents she loved them to.  I had tried to protect her and failed. The bullet had passed through my shoulder and into her lungs.  I touched the round exit scar just above my collar bone.  Nothing like having a permenant reminder of how you failed.

Fuck, it just hurt so bad on some days that I wanted to give up.  The first year I tried to.  I did drugs, drank and slept with girls with out any respect for myself.    Aiden and my grandma pulled me out of my self loathing and put me in rehab.  The second year I just tried to get by.  I got clean and kept everyone except Aiden, my grandma and my dad at a distance.  Finally Aiden and my dad convinced me to move out of LA.  Aiden was going to Davis for pre-med and my grandma had a studio at her house in Citrus Heights I could do recording and start working on the new label I started with my dad.   I was ready to leave my misery in LA behind.  I just wanted to be alone.

Yet, I had only been in Citrus Heights two days and I had met a girl that was threatening to tear down the walls I had worked so hard to put up.

My grandma interrupted my thoughts by knocking on the studio door.  She told me that Spencer had called and said Pearl was doing very well.  I was glad for my grandma she loved those damn horses probably as much as she loved me.

    She grabbed my hand.

“Come on.  Let’s get you out of this room and all your sadness.” She said.

I smiled and stood up.  She was right.  I needed to start leaving some of that sadness behind even if it was just one step at a time.

    1. I like Ashley’s grandma…cheeky! So Ashley lied about being gay, because she’s still in love with her girlfriend Cass who died on prom night…not for long though Spencer has away of getting under your skin and into the heart. I can’t wait to see how this story plays out. Looking forward to your next update.
