The Agent – (Chapter: Why do all good things come to an end?)

"I did care about her a great deal, but I just don’t to talk about her because it hurts too much. Can we talk about something else please? Anything else?"

I nodded. "Yeah let’s just get to the car and get out of here."

The car drive was silent. I was feeling as morbid as ever. The only joy I was experiencing at all was the Tegan and Sara CD currently playing. This was the first time that the silence we were experiencing was awkward. There was so much I wanted to say, wanted to ask, but I knew I couldn’t. I started to think about Aiden. I really needed him around, even just to see him. Somehow knowing he was around always made things better, easier. I suddenly got an idea, and in that instant I wanted to kick myself for being so stupid. I perked up, speeding up a bit when I saw a gas station up ahead.

"I need to stop for a bit, there’s something I have to do." I did not wait for any response from Spencer. Instead, I got out the car and headed to a quiet area, pulled my cell phone out my pocket, and dialed a number

"Agent 22468 calling for Agent 33870." I was put through immediately

"Ashley?" came the puzzled voice on the other end of the line.

    "Madison."

"What the fuck is going on? The agency is buzzing over here because of you."

    "Did they kill Aiden?"

"No, they just beat him real bad, and put him back on level 1 access. What’s going on?"

"I need your help." The phone line went silent followed by a few mumbled words I couldn’t make out.

"I can’t do that Ashley. They’ll probably kill me I’m not as important to them as Aiden is and there’s no way in hell I’m going back on level 1 access. Not when I worked so hard to reach level 6."

"I saved your life twice. The way I see it, you owe me Madison." I didn’t want to put her on a guilt trip but I was desperate.

    "Fine, what is it?"

"I need info on a contract, Spencer Carlin. It was taken out by Paula Carlin, must’ve been about a month ago."

"You know they don’t leave information like that lying around here. It’s locked away."

"Exactly and you have level 6 access you can just walk on in there and get the file. Nobody will bother you.”

"Why is this so important to you?"

    "It just is."

    "What information do you want?"

"Uhm, I need you to check the reasons for the contract and if there’s any mention of an ex girlfriend Melissa. I’m not sure of her surname."

"Why do you want information on an ex-girlfriend? Are you jealous or something?" I sighed.

"No. I met with Spencer’s mother earlier. She told me some things I just want verified. Call me when you got it okay?"

    "I don’t have your number."

"You’re tracing this call aren’t you?" I hung up and was about to walk back to the car when the phone rang

    "Hello?"

"Agent, you’re still alive." I didn’t have time for this,

"I’m gonna do it, I just need more time." I hung up, not in the mood for this conversation.

I swung around coming face to face with Spencer instantly dropping the phone.

"How long have you been standing there?"

"Long enough to know that we need to talk," came a harsh reply.
