The New Girl – (Chapter: So it begins…)
It’s about damn time. The house next to mine has been being built for almost a year now. Well, it is finally finished (the key word being finally,) and my new neighbors are moving in. From my position in the living room, I can see a moving van and a few men hauling couches, tables, lamps, etc. into the house. There is a girl who looks about my age standing in the front lawn with her hands on her hips, looking out at the neighborhood like it’s a painting she has spent years working on and it is finally finished. Her hair is long, dark brown, and curly. She is tall and thin with tanned skin, wearing a black “wife beater” and short jean shorts. I feel pretty nosey watching all this from the living room window, so I decide I might as well introduce myself and get to know these people whom I will have to live next to.
Stepping out onto my front porch, the warm summer air hits my face like a ton of bricks. It’s really hot today; it’s supposed to get up to 95. That may not be too hot for some people, but for a girl who has spent her whole life in upstate New York it’s a scorcher. The door behind me slams shut, as it always does, making the girl in her yard turn and look at me. I smile and start to walk towards her.
“Hey,” I say while walking, “I’m Spencer. Guess I’m your new neighbor.”
“Hey,” she replies while extending her right hand which I promptly shake, “I’m Ashley.” She drops my hand and looks me up and down. I blush as her eyes slowly scan my body. Her lips curl to a smile as she looks me in the eye.
“It’s nice to meet you, Spencer.”
“You too.” We both paused for a moment, letting the awkwardness take hold.
“Um, I like your shirt.” She said to me, breaking the silence.
“Why thank you.” I say in my best cocky voice. I’m wearing a dark green t-shirt that says, “Save the Planet.” I have on a pretty short jean skirt. My hair is tied back in a pony tail. I love my hair. It is long, blonde, and the one thing on me that I’m always sure looks good.
