The Rush You Give Me – (Chapter: one: The Fam)
I’m brought out of the rant in my head by Kelly poking me, I turn around at her, faking smiling. “What’s the answer to number twelve?”
I rolled my eyes at her and simply answered twenty-four before we both focused back on what we were doing. There was a knock at the door and a woman I had never seen before entered, having a little talk with our teacher and facing the class. “Good morning students, I’m the new principle.” She smiled. A female principle. This school has a 99.9% average of excellent behaviour but even she is going to find it difficult with some of them. “I don’t like this whole teacher authority thing,” here we go. It’s going to be something like a ‘but I will put it into affect if I have to’ warning. “But,” told you, “hopefully I won’t need to use it.” Told you it would be something like that didn’t I? I rolled my eyes yet again. “So to make you feel more like you can trust me, we are going to be on a first name basis.” Well, didn’t see that coming. “Hi class, I’m June.” She smiled. Argh, that smile is so fake.
“June?” Kelly asked.
“Yes?”
“Nothing, I just wanted to try it out.” She smirked. Oh there is so much more to that story than she is letting on. I shook my head at her. June seemed to have brought it and happily made her way out of the classroom before we got back on with our work.
“What was that about?” I asked warily.
“Nothing at all. Oh by the way I need you to start practice today, I’m going to be late.” Did I mention she was head cheerleader? Well she is. And probably the only one that deserves it. I nod at her and she just smiles before concentrating on her work again.
So the day surprisingly went pretty fast and I headed home with Kelly. “Wanna come in?” I looked at her house. She had the perfect family. Mum was a T.V. presenter. Dad, a shrink. Brother in the army and a younger brother that had just started middle school. Their house was a home. Not just a place to sleep at night.
I looked at the door, the number ‘4’ hanging in silver on the blue background. Through the windows the T.V. was on, the view slightly blocked at the sides by the blue drapes that hung there. It was just too homely for me. “No thanks.”
“Ok. You’re loss biatch.” She winks, showing me she’s messing even though I already knew she was. I say bye to her and head towards my ‘home’. Our family is ok. Paula ‘mum’, the doctor. Dad, the social worker. Glen the spoilt brat star basketball player. And me, the grade A cheerleader.
What a shame it was all a cardboard cut out.
