The Wedding… – (Chapter: I Chose You…)
“I know. Trust me, I know. But it’s important to me that you understand how sorry I am. It’s been really hard to shake you, Spencer.”
She might have smiled. But before I could fully process, all possible traces of it were gone, “And you owe me a mural.”
“What?”
I mentally shook myself, “No, no…I don’t know what I’m saying. I’m nervous and I’m scared that I’ve lost you…not like I ever had you. I just…”
“Ashley, I can’t be with someone who has these unrealistic expectations or this divine idea of who I’m supposed to be. I’m human. I screw up sometimes. I need to know that when I need to escape from all the critics of the world, my girlfriend won’t be yet another one.”
I nodded, allowing her to continue.
“That weekend was really amazing until…and the person that was present for the first half of it, that’s the person I fell for.”
“She’s still here! But just like you said, I have moments where I’m a little less myself and…”
“And you want to know that those moments are ok too.”
“Exactly.”
“Well it seems like we want the same thing, Ashley.”
“Seems like it.”
We were quiet for a minute, distracting ourselves with menus. This was the part I had always been bad at. What now?
“So, what kind of mural do you want?”
Just let it happen, Ashley.
“I was thinking about getting one on my bathroom floor.”
“Oh really?”
“Yeah, yeah…something classic.”
“Like perhaps the Mona Lisa…something like that?”
“That sounds perfect, actually,” I said with a smile.
“I figured. It was just a hunch but it felt right.”
“I know exactly what you mean.”
The walk to her apartment was awkward. I felt the weight of a thousand missed opportunities.
I should hold her hand.
I should kiss her under this awning.
I should actually talk about something that doesn’t involve the weather.
But no. Instead we strolled in awkward silence most of the way.
She wasn’t helping.
“This is it,” she said finally, jingling her keys. The gesture reminded me of when she wanted me to leave with her at the reception. I chose Carmen instead. Sometimes I really get these things wrong. But God takes pity on me.

I am no longer a participant in the functioning world. – my sentiments exactly after having read this fabulous ending. I agree with jbs10 with my favorite line: “You’re so going to get it when I’m not all…paralyzed with pleasure.” That was HOT! Awesome story!
