What A Great Way To Start The New Year
By now Ashley had a ninja death grip on Kyla’s arm. It was getting to be quite painful as Ashley’s perfectly manicured, but nonetheless sharp, nails were digging further and further into the poor girls arm.
“OW!”
“Oh. Woops. Sorry Ky.”
“Oh don’t worry about it…at least you didn’t draw blood this time.”
“So Doc, when’s she gonna be fully awake?”
“That, I can’t answer Ashley.” His gaze traveled back to Spencer. “It all depends on that little girl’s strength.”
He started walking out of the room, but before leaving said. “Truth be told, I think you had something to do with it. You’ve been here 24/7 for this girl…even when her parents started losing hope you never left her side. You’re like her guardian angel. You two take care now. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Bye Doc.”
Ashley and Kyla returned their focus back on Spencer again. Both ecstatic at the news they’d just received.
“So Ash…you know what today is right?”
“Um…no actually.”
“When was the last time you looked at a calendar?”
“May 13th, 2006.”
“Oh…”
The day King High students would never forget, the day of prom.
“I had the dream again.”
“Oh god Ash…you have to stop blaming yourself. This isn’t your fault. You didn’t put her in here. You didn’t pull the trigger.”
“I know but…god. WHY Spencer?! WHY Kyla?! Tell me why it had to be her? Why couldn’t it have been me? Huh? She did NOTHING to deserve this! All I had to do was take her in my arms and tell her that I loved her with all my heart and that she was my everything. Then she wouldn’t have run out to the front of the school, she wouldn’t have been in the way of that bullet.”
“You didn’t know! 20/20 hindsight is a real bitch I know, but you can’t keep blaming yourself for something you had no control over. You didn’t know that car was pulling up. You didn’t know the bastard was going to start shooting! There’s nothing you can do to change the past. At least she’s coming back right? She’s coming back to you Ash…be grateful!”
“I am…trust me…I am. I don’t think I’ll be able to get past it til I know for sure that she’s back. Back here with her family, back at school, and back with me.”
