6 Months- chapter 10
“*****, *****, *****, *****, *****!!” was all that Alice could sputter. She was furious. Her editor had given her a crappy assignment that would have her in Palm Springs for the week. She knew that she really needed to talk to Bette, but was not going to be able to get to her house. She also knew how much Bette hated to be interrupted at work and so left a message on her home phone. She had tried her cell but kept getting an message about the number being disconnected. “What was up with that?” Alice muttered.
The message that she had left for Bette was one that implored her to call her and that if she did not hear back from her by the end of the week, she was coming over when she got back in town. What crappy timing for this assignment, but it was one that she could not turn down.
She had talked to both Shane and Dana during the week, but had made no plans to get together. She asked each of them how they thought that Tina was doing and the response was always the same, “She is just working things out, give her time”. How much time, though? Was six months, now going on seven, not enough? Alice knew that she could never understand what Tina was going through, as she had never experienced a love like that that Tina and Bette had shared. But for God’s sweet sake, couldn’t we see some progress here?
She had half a mind to drive over to the CAC right now to sit Bette down, and get all of this worked out, but she knew that that couldn’t happen. As it was, she should have left LA last night to get to the Palm Springs event that she was covering.
Well, she thought to herself, by the end of the week, Porter had better have called me and by then, we will get this all figured out. This had to end.
It was Monday night in New York, and Bette knew that she could no longer put off telling her friends that she had moved. The gallery was quiet as she stared at the empty wordless paper in front of her. “Where to begin? Well, I guess at the beginning” Bette thought to herself.
She grabbed her pen and began to write. The words began to flow onto the page, almost faster than Bette could get them down. She didn’t realize until the end, that she had been crying, tears pooling on her desk next to the letter. She had put her heart into that letter and hoped that her friends would understand. She had been sitting there for an hour and a half, looking at it and rereading it. She knew though it conveyed what she had wished to say.
She folded it up, placed it in the envelope and added the necessary postage. “This is it”, she thought to herself, “there will be no going back after this.” Everything will be out in the open and she would just have to wait for their reaction. Brace herself for their reaction was more like it.
She wearily got up from her desk, grabbed her bag and the letter. As she walked out of the gallery, she turned the lights off behind her.
She locked up the gallery and walked down the street towards her apartment. She had long ago sent her driver home knowing that she would need the fresh air. As she approached the next corner, she saw the all too familiar mailbox. She walked up to it and stood in front of it. As she reached for the handle, her hand paused. “Did you really think this through?” she asked herself.
“Yes”, she replied.
With that, she put the letter into the mailbox, heard it tumble down to join the pile of other letters awaiting the postal carrier, and continued to walk towards the hotel.
As she went upstairs to her apartment, she wondered what the affect of her note would be. She shrugged her shoulders and knew that it was both literally and figuratively out of her hands.
She got to her apartment, unlocked the door, allowing her weary body to enter. Tomorrow would be another day and, she knew, as would all of the others to follow that. What she did not know was who would be in her future, and who would remain in her past.

Another intense chapter, I was somw what disappointed in not knowing what Bette wrote to her friends. Catch the next one, and thanks for posting. It is nice that we don’t have to wait for such a lenghty period of time for the next chapter. But it also depends how long and how many chapters it is intended to go. Thanks
