A Christmas Story Chapter 4 (Short Story)

    “Hey baby sis.”

“Hey,” Bette looked up from making the bed. “Have a good sleep?”

“Yeah.” Kit smiled. “Where’s everyone at?”

“They just went back downstairs. I don’t know what they’re doing, but they were all bundled up.”

“Uh huh,” Kit crossed her arms. “So where’s Angelica?”

“She’s still sleeping in her room.” Bette smoothed the blanket out and sat down on the bed. “So…”

    “So…” Kit sighed.

“Why did you really tag along with us this Christmas instead of Angus?”

“I-I just didn’t want to go meet us family. I don’t think they would be fond of seeing their son with an older, black woman.”

“How would you know if you didn’t go?”

“I just have that feeling baby sis. I know that Angus knew the real reason why I didn’t go with him, but he was okay with that.”

“As long as he was all right with it.” Bette got up from the bed and walked towards the door. “Lets go get some coffee.” They walked out of the bedroom and walked down the stairs. They talked and laughed softly and walked into the kitchen.

“Where’s everybody at?” Kit looked around.

    ——————————————–

Alice, Dana, Tina, Shane and Carmen were walking outside looking for a tree. Carmen linked her arm with Shane’s as they walked. She leaned against her, and Shane gave her a kiss on top of her head.

“Are they just cute together? I can’t believe how Shane has changed.” Tina spoke.

“Carmen was the right woman for her. She’s the only one who can tame the wild beast.” Alice chuckled.

“Hey, what about this tree?” Dana asked as she looked at the tree on the right of her. Shane and Carmen were in their own little world.

“Hey love birds,” Alice yelled up. “Come back,” Shane and Carmen looked back and noticed that Alice, Dana and Tina were ten feet back. They walked back and looked up at the tree.

“That’s a really big tree.” Carmen took a step back.

    “Carmen’s right, it’s really big.”

“How big do you think it is?” Alice asked.

“I would say about thirty feet.” Dana looked up at the tree.

“Oh no, there’s no way in hell that tree is getting into that cabin.” Tina shook her head. “Can’t we just find a smaller tree or better yet, just use our fake tree?”

“C’mon TK, don’t you want a real tree in the cabin? It brings a lot more love and warmth.” Alice protested.

“Uhh—don’t you ever wonder what’s actually in these trees? They’re could be birds and stuff in these trees.” Dana said.

“Okay is everybody starting to have second thoughts about having a real tree in the cabin?” Alice looked around at her friends.

“You know how hard it will be to bring a tree back to the cabin Al. We can drag a tree this size back to the cabin on our own.” Shane slipped her hands in her pockets, and Alice sighed.

“All right, we can just use the crappy, fake tree then.”

“Hey,” Tina scuffed. “My tree isn’t crappy.” They walked away from the tree and walked back to the cabin.

    —————————–

Bette and Kit were talking in the kitchen as the rest of the group walked in. Kit looked up and smiled.

“Where did you guys go off to?”

“Alice thought that we should find ourselves a real Christmas tree, but we didn’t have any luck.”

“Well I just wanted us to have a real tree, but I guess we can settle with the fake tree.” Alice pouted and sat down.

“Awww it’s okay babe. We still have our tree sitting up at home.” Dana wrapped her arms around her shoulders and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Alice smiled warmly and rested her hands on Dana’s arms.

“Well,” Bette took the last drink of her coffee and licked her lips. “Why don’t we get the tree out of the van and get it set up and decorated. Then after, check out the resort about skiing.”

“I’m going to wake up Angelica. She’s been in bed too long.” Tina walked out of the kitchen.

“I’m going to get the tree out of the van.” Bette sat her cup down on the counter.

“I’ll help you Bette.” Shane walked away from Carmen.

    “Okay,” Bette nodded and smiled.

    1. I love Christmas, but no real tree, they make me very ill, the last real tree we had we were living in Bango Maine. A lot of yrs ago. I love to give things little and lots of them. Love Alice she always want what she can have. thanks

    2. Alice does not live in the real world. Not only could they not have gotten a 30′ tree back to the cabin, they don’t have anything to make a stand with and tht would have taken some major carpentry work for which they don’t have the tools or lumber. The woman doesn’t think, just comes up with these hairbrained ideas. she is truly blonde sometimes. So happy our girls are doing fine. Love the story, it’s great. PPS
