A Life I Never Meant Chapter Eighteen

I don’t reply. My mind has started to race. All of that time I just spent in LA and she doesn’t want to talk, and now as soon as I come back here she’s calling me, and how did she get this number? What could she possibly have to tell me that it should only come from her?

“Tina, shall I put her through? She sounded upset about something and almost desperate to talk to you.”

“Yeah, sorry Julie, it’s just been a long time since I’ve spoken to her that’s all.”

“OK, I’m going to put her through now.”

“Thanks, and don’t you think it’s about time you left for the night?”

“I’m on my way now, goodnight.”

I listen to the clicking sound that indicates that the call has been transferred. For a brief moment I forget where I am and just think about how long I’ve waited for this moment to happen.

“Hello Bette.” I say, for the lack of anything else to say.

“You’re working late.” she replies, and I know that Julie is right, she is desperate about something.

    “Are you OK?”

“I don’t really know how to tell you this, and to be honest I haven’t even began to believe it myself yet…”

“Bette, tell me. There’s something very wrong, I can tell by the sound of your voice. Is it Kit?” I ask, becoming more and more anxious.

“No, Kit’s fine. It’s Shane…she…there were some complications.”

    “What kind of complications?”

All I can hear now is the quiet sound of Bette sobbing and two thoughts cross my mind simultaneously. The first being how I hated to hear Bette cry, I heard it so rarely that I honestly felt that my own heart was breaking, the second being that there can only be one reason why Bette would be crying like this, and I can’t even begin to comprehend what that means.

“What’s happened Bette?” I ask, gently.

“There was a blot clot, it did something to her lungs and she couldn’t…I don’t really understand the details but…they couldn’t save her.”

As I hear Bette’s last word I feel the phone dropping from my hand. My mind goes completely blank. There is no way that Bette said what she just said. It just can’t be true. I stare at the phone that is now resting on the desk, and I’m thinking that I should pick it up and resume my conversation with Bette, but I don’t want to. I just want to go back in time to a place before I started this phone call. After all, if that were the case then it might not be true. I can hear the faint traces of Bette’s voice coming down the line from LA. I can’t understand what she is saying but even from this far away I know that she wants to know if I’m alright. Eventually the right motor skills come into play and I pick up the phone.

    1. I´m FIRST!!!!! And i already posted this but…Ohmygod, Ohmygod, Ohmygod, Ohmygod. If I understand correctly, Ally is going to LA with Tina and Bette is picking them at the airport????? if tha´t so then , Ohmygod, Ohmygod, Ohmygod,Ohmygod,Ohmygod. Excellent chapter, amazing words and my friends thinks I´m crazy for saying “No, No, No” to my computer.

    2. Okay, did Tina have a memory lapse when she asked Bette to pick her up at the airport? She didn’t mention Ally. I’m guessing Ally was an afterthought and now it’s gonna be all kinds of awkward. O.o

    3. so ally is coming to LA woth Tina? hmmm, i wonder how it will turn out…what if Bette decides to let Tina go finally after seeing them together? i’m still hoping for B&T getting back together and it’s sad that Shane has to die for that to happen…and i hope that they will get back together because then Shane’s death would be meaningless

    4. She(Ally) can not go to LA with Tina!!!! and Tina should have been the one to tell Alice not someone who does not know her or maybe that will make it better.

    5. I think Ally kind of invited herself and Tina was not thinking and only needed someone to hold her up. This story still has me thinking that citygirl is going to break my Tibette heart. This is the one time that Bette really needs Tina to be with her, alone. Bette is already a broken woman and now to loose that last remaining strong hold of her life she will be utterly lost. Kit is her sister but she could never understand the deep love the Bette and Tina shared and now have lost.

    6. absolutely awesome -the tension and pain just jumped off the page. I hate that Shane had to die to bring them together but perhaps now at least needing one another to get through the loss will allow the healing they both need. Whichever one Tina goes with I’m routing for the writer who can really spin a fabulous story.

    7. IS Ally going to LA? Man, that’s going to be an exceptionally sticky wicket. Like there won’t be enough emotion floating around out there. Too bad for Ally, she’s been nothing but decent and she’s gonna get crushed by the weight of the epic love of B & T. By the way, I agree with Dimples 100%.

    8. OK citygirl, this situation is easy to rectify. :-)Tina has Alice to go w/her to NYC. She does not need Ally . Ally just complicates the issues. She will always be Tina’s second choice. Any good friend would do what Ally’s doing for Tina. It’s just common decency. TiBette forever!

    9. Sending Ally to LA with Tina and they will be in Bette’s car together? I wonder if it’s a good idea? Poor Bette, she has to handle the death of Shane and Tina with someone else. I am glad to see Tina and Bette finally talk.

    10. Nooo…Ally can’t go to LA with Tina! That’s so cruel, I don’t think Bette can handle it anymore. *sniffs* Damn you are killing me here, please post soon

    11. “…now you’ve got to go through something else, but you’re not on your own this time.” …See, I gathered that Ally meant Tina would have Bette. I didn’t get that she was going. If she does, she’s asking for a red eye heartache. Shane died for their sins, the price has been paid for them to reunite, etc., etc. How or why else would they have ever spoken to each other again??? Somebody had to do it! I hope Shane was an organ donor. (Tsk, tsk, Techie, always the practical one!) Thanks!

    12. You know I read that as Tina having Bette in LA too, well, we’ll soon see. But I have to say, 5 years and then 1 phone call, those years just got completely wiped away with a few words to one another, neither one ever forgot. Superbly written mate as always. I’m looking forward to the next emotional chapter.

    13. well first, I will never forgive you for killing off Shane; and why oh why are you sending Ally with Tina to LA?!!!!!!I mean to say she sounds like a nice person and all BUT??!!! and what’s with Tina calling her ‘baby’ that’s reserved for ‘our Bette’!!!! and well, I dunno you’re driving me crazy with your story…but more soon please, lmao.

    14. I cannot believe Tina is letting someone else (that is not one of the LA Family Clan) tell Alice that Shane is dead???? What’s up with that? Especially with Alice losing Dana not too long ago…this news may cause her to fall over into the mind swallowing abyss!

    15. Wonderful chapter. It’s amazing to me that your words can evoke so many emotions in me. I’m not feeling good about the possiblity of a B&T reunion–I hope I’m wrong. Thank you City for creating this amazing story.

    16. I can understand Tina being in such shock that all she can think about is having someone she loves, and who loves her close to her. However, I would also hope that at some point she realizes how much Bette has already lost in her life and would not subject her to more loss…more pain by having to watch Tina being loved and comforted by another woman. At any other time, it would be okay to bring Ally with her, but under these circumtances, to me it would be for Tina’s selfish reasons only. I also understand why Tina would want Ally to tell Alice. Remember, Ally and Alice were friends first, and then Alice introduced Ally to Tina. So they are very close friends. This has been a heartbreaking story from the very first chapter. Thank you for taking the time to post.

    17. I know it’s already been said but Tina should have told Alice about Shane. Until Tina officially gets with Ally Ally is an outsider with benefits. Tina is not thinking of Bette at all in this situation, Bette just told her that she still loves her and what does she do? Draw up a defensive plan to counteract that i.e. invite Ally to LA. Why is she making this difficult? Just see Bette and talk…and then get on with your life from there, she’s dragging out this situation. If nothing else Bette needs closure. This story is so good…don’t leave us hanging for too long.

    18. Everyone should have a sonderful, supportive friend like Ally to get them through the bad times. That being said, please don’t let her go to LA especially not if Bette is forced into picking her up – it’s the family picture thing all over again. Ally’s a nice character, but how about a terribel bout with the flu, an unexpected work related trip, food poisoning, her sister with the 6 kids broke her leg and Ally needs to go help her…..etc. Thanks for writing!

    19. Oh gosh! Another emotional chapter. Great writing! If Ally is going to go with Tina, I don’t think that’s such a good idea, coz she’s going to be heartbroken …
