Bette placed one more call to L.A. before she boarded her plane home.
“Hello?”
“Hi Tina.”
“Hi Babe, Where are you?”
“Just getting ready to board my flight back to L.A.”
“Oh. I thought you were in the air already, wasn’t your flight earlier today?”
“I was detained in a meeting this afternoon, so I had to take a later flight.”
“So what time will you get in then?”
“Don’t worry, it will be late. Kit will pick me up, she has my car so she kind of has to.”
“Are you sure? I could just get Kit to come here, and I could come and get you.”
“No, it’s okay. You need your rest, and I already have it all worked out with Kit. Thank you though for offering.”
“Okay. Well I guess then you are all set, so I will see you later, or in the morning.”
“Alright, have a good night T. Give my girl a kiss for me.”
“I will.”
“Um, okay bye then.”
“Bye. I love you” Tina says after Bette disconnected.
“Something isn’t right.” Tina says out loud to herself. “She was done her meetings yesterday, I wonder why she sounded so….down?”
On the flight Bette reflected on her meeting today. The only one she had today, which was with her therapist. Since her third day in NewYork, she had at the end of every workday, made appointments to see her therapist. Today was her eleventh session, and to date her hardest. Today she tackled her side of her affair, and what drove her to it. Today she had to deal with all the anger and guilt she felt in its wake. But more importantly she had to deal with the why. Why did she go outside her marriage, her trust, and love for Tina, and let someone else physically into her life? What was she looking for, and what kind of a person did it make her in the aftermath?
In Bette’s eyes, there is no justification for what she did. Especially because it held so little satisfaction, and meaning, and it had not solved any issues she was having at the time. Even during the brief affair, she knew there was no resolution, but she couldn’t figure out why she went back. Why she continued it for the brief week it existed.
