All or Nothing — Part 6 —– Home is where the heart is

Bette sat in the waiting room all that night, oblivious to the bussling action around her, Tina’s voice echoing through her brain again and again. Flashes of conversation with her, arguments, kept bouncing through her skull, driving her insane. Climbing out of her seat she wandered outside, still off in a dreamworld.

So we’ve put an end to it this time.
I’m no longer yours and you’re no longer mine.
You said this hill looks far too steep
if I’m not even sure it’s me you wanna keep.
And it’s been ten days without you in my reach,
and the only time I’ve touched you is in my sleep.

Tina lay asleep, her left arm in a cast, and the shadow of bruises already rising across her left cheek. She’d been lucky, apparently. But no one knew of the turmoil her heart was going through. When she’d awoken, hearing Bette crying, she felt her heart being torn in two. One side wanted to talk to Bette, tell her that they were going to be okay, the other side wanted to run, far away, so she could hide from everything that was going on, the fighting, the lying…

But time has changed nothing at all –
you’re still the only one that feels like home.
I’ve tried cutting the ropes and
I let you go but you’re still the only one
    that feels like home.

Whats going on with my life, Bette wondered to herself. What the ***** is happening to me?! Her head was spinning with lack of food and sleep, and she felt exausted. But she had to keep going, keep battling.
    For Tina.
But does Tina even want me anymore? Bette fretted, feeling her heart tear in two. She kept thinking about the way Tina was screaming. Was she ok? Bette worried, standing and watching the grey drizzle come down from the heaven above, feeling its cool and gentle touch waking her up and healing her hurt.

You won’t talk me into it next time,
if I’m going away your hearts coming too.
‘Cos I miss your hands I miss your face.
When I get back let’s disappear without a trace.
‘Cos it’s been ten days without you in my reach,
and the only time I’ve touched you is in my sleep.

Tina looked over at her bedside table, past the numerous bunches of flowers to see a photo of her and Bette beside them. A happy photo, taken at the spur of the moment. Tina couldn’t recall when it was taken but she loved it. They looked so happy. Reaching out, she clutched it to her chest, already working out what she was going to say. Knowing she’d have to do it soon. Knowing that this wasn’t fair to her or Bette, leaving Bette hanging. Knowing that Bette had lied to her. Knowing they’d fought. Tina found some paper and a pen in the drawers and began to write her letter to Bette. Explaining everything.

But time has changed nothing at all –
you’re still the only one that feels like home.
    I’ve tried cutting the ropes,
tried letting go but you’re still the only one
    that feels like home.

So tell me, did you really think…
oh tell me, did you really think
I had gone when you couldn’t see me anymore?
    When you couldn’t…

Bette felt a hand on her shoulder and turned, seeing the concerned face of her sister standing there.
“Bette, you’re soaked, come on, I’ll take you home and let you get into some dry clothes” Kit said, pulling Bette in out of the rain now pouring down from the sky.
“No, I’m not leaving Tina..” Bette replied definatly, sitting down in one of the waiting room chairs.
“She asked me to give you this Bette” Kit passed her a letter from Tina.

    Dear Bette,
I’m sorry I yelled when I woke up, I didn’t expect you to be there.
I over reacted when you told me “the secret” and for that I’m sorry. I’m so confused Bette, I don’t know whats going on and I’m scared.
I just needed to say one thing, home is where the heart is, and my home, is you
    I love you forever
    T

I let you go but you’re still the only one
    that feels like home, yeah,
you’re still the only one that feels like home,
you’re still the only one I’ve gotta love.
