American Werewolves in London: Part 1

The moors were eerie this late at night. A gentle fog lolled against the landscape. It was damned cold for October, and the women stared regretfully at the lorry that had dropped them off.  It rode away slowly, gaining speed as it escaped along the highway.

“Where the fuck are we?” Jenny (whose last name had recently been dropped for the sake of personal reinvention and who usually went by the lower case letter ‘j’) spoke slowly.

Bette Porter sighed, shrugged her backpack higher on her shoulders, and turned to address her angry little friend. They had traveled together now for a day and a half.  It had been a long 36 hours.

“We’re in England Jenny.” Bette scowled down at her red jacket, hating its bulkiness.  It was warm enough, but she worried that it might be ugly and too puffy.

“Yes, I know we’re in England Bette, but why on earth are we here in this part of England in the middle of the fucking night?” Jenny, on the other hand, wore a stylish black pea coat. She was not warm, and her jet lag had destroyed her mood.

They’d landed in London and made their way north by hitchhiking.  The English car owning class were fairly friendly, and they’d had no trouble finding rides.  Unfortunately it had taken them a day longer than they anticipated, and their hostel was still far.  It was the middle of the night, and it was Halloween.

“Funny, no one seemed to care that it was Halloween.” Jenny spoke to the air, caring not whether Bette heard or acknowledged her.  They were roommates, shoved together by the powers that be. Bette had agreed to travel with Jenny on a whim.   She was beginning to regret it.

“yeah. No kids wandering in costumes…” Bette stopped.  She suddenly looked hopeful as they entered a small village. “Hey, is this where our hostel is?”

“East Proctor. No…we’re still a ways off.  This town seems empty anyway.” Jenny poured over the map she carried then handed it to Bette for a second opinion. The town was deserted. Shop windows were shuttered; the streets were empty. Then again…

    1. Okay ASH this is the American Werewolf in London and I loved that movive,,,LOL but I like your version better..oh yeah liked how jenny was taken,,,,,,great start

    2. helebette!!!! I love you!!! This is so good, and right around halloween too? Jenny is damn crazy in every fan fic I read and I don’t think it can be any other way. I was actually cheering–loudly, I might add–when she got dragged off! PPS

    3. HB, your depiction of j had me howling. And despite despotic Jenny’s declaration that anything that might happen would be Bette’s fault, I blame Jenny, this time with perhaps more justification than I sometimes do. What can I tell you? I like blaming Jenny, it’s become reflexive. I can’t think of anyone I’d prefer to have thrown to the dogs, although Faye and Franklin are also good candidates. F them. Did you know I was born in the year of the Dog? Make of that what you will. Release the hounds!

    4. I’m surprised Jenny didn’t scare the wolf away, but extra-loud cheers to her being dragged off. Early on the story seemed about to take a turn into the realm of demonic possession, because I couldn’t figure out what possessed Bette to subject herself to a walking tour with Jenny. The werewolf angle is hugely entertaining, and as the story unfolds I suspect you’ll be bringing the sexy too.

    5. Well, I didn’t see the film (not that I can recall), so it will all be a surprise for me : either j is dead, either she’s been transformed into a werewolf (it comes after a bite I think, contrarily to vampires who need to share blood with a vampire to become one, right ?) — Well, if she was bitten, Bette is also one now ;-) — I agree that British moors, at night, in autumn are creepy (and more than that), especially when it rains (which *can* happen) : crossing them on foot (or hitch-hiking) at Halloween is more than dangerous : it is completely stupid (like generally all creepy stories heroes are ;-)) — Now, bring on Dr Peabody, please, whether it is Peggy or her sexy daughter (they are both delightful, each in her own manner)
