Anatomy of a Breakdown Chap 7

“You thought it would help solve the problems we were already having?” Tina nods her head. “I just thought that… you wanted it that way. That you wanted to carry the baby and wanted me to work.”

Meanwhile in the house Shane, Alice, Dana and Kit stand in the kitchen looking out at the two women engaged in deep conversation.

                “We should go.” Shane announces.

“We should.” Kit repeats. They stand and stare for another moment. Then they all turn to leave except for Alice who remains standing until she feels Dana tug her arm.

“C’mon Al, I’ll buy you a drink.” Alice turns to look at Dana; she feels her heart flutter at her touch.

“You’re on.’ She says lightly following Dana’s lead out of the house. Kit scribbles a note and leaves it for Bette on the coffee table before they make their exit.

It was a quiet night in LA the distant sounds of cars rushing the freeway disappear as Bette looksz at Tina. ‘You need to be strong.’ She says to herself. She shakes the thought out of her mind, ‘being “strong” is what got you in this mess.’

“Bette I did. I wanted to quit work or at least I thought I did. I also thought it was what you wanted. Or maybe I wanted something to reflect tradition. Like some 1950’s daydream. Who knows?”

“Tee I… we should’ve talked more. We should’ve just been more honest. You’d think that would be easy after seven years together. It seems it became more difficult. I never wanted to disappoint you and as hard as I work the more disappointed you became.”

“I just needed you Bette, not this… This… I don’t know not this keeper, not my keeper.” She looked down again. She couldn’t believe she was laying everything down on the table. She feels overwhelmed yet liberated. “We became so unequal in our relationship.”

                “I know Tee.”

“Remember when I called to tell you to come home for dinner the night you found out about the baby?”

“Yes, I was such an asshole. There you were holding out an olive branch and I just shot you down… You offered to make it all better. I should’ve said yeah baby you’re the only one who can.” Bette begins to cry

    1. glad they r talking… and ii agree… that night when tina left bette and melvin at dinner… bette should of got up and left too… great chapter… PPS

    2. Hey denEmat, I’m really enjoying your tale. Delayed honesty is soooo much harder than telling the truth in the moment….the delay gives us too much time to speculate and imagine all kinds of responses, outcomes and it even alters reality somewhat. And the results are often as immediately painfully as ultimately rewarding. Its good that our girls are getting honest with each other. Thanks for writing. PPS.

    3. What a way to end a beautiful party with friends and family. Poor Bette, falling asleep when all she wants to do is spend time with Tina. Maybe they should not stay in the same bed but darn it, I think that it is a great idea.
