And Then There Were None, Ch. 9 – The Final Chapter

Tinas eyes flickered open, her right arm lying across Bettes back, the gun still pressed against the base of Bettes skull. She let out a small groan as she struggled out from underneath Bettes dead body. Pushing the body out of the way, she managed to get to her feet.

Glancing down at Bettes blank, lifeless eyes, Tina shook her head. Poor Bette, she said, biting her lip. I believe I might actually miss you. With that, she let her gun fall to the floor from her right hand with a clatter.

Holding her head high, Tina walked away from the body and headed toward the door, pushing Helenas dead arm aside with her foot. Suddenly, a hand grabbed weakly at her wrist. She let out a little shriek and looked down.

Shane lay there, one eye barely open, with her blood-streaked hand feebly gripping Tinas ankle. Youll never get away with this, Shane managed to spit out haltingly, small droplets of blood coming out of her mouth as she spoke.

Shane, sweetie, I already have, Tina told her with a small smile. The real killers dead, she added, pointing to Helenas bullet-ridden body. She reached behind her, pulling out the gun that was tucked into her waistband.

Why? Shane asked, desperately stalling for time as she tried maneuvering her hand to the gun at her own waist.

Ever watched your parents get murdered? Itll ***** a person up, Tina told her with a wicked laugh, not at all oblivious to Shanes movements, but having fun watching her try to save herself.

I thought your parents were alive. Bette talked to your mother, Shane gasped out with a cough.

She certainly talked to someone, Tina deadpanned with a deep Southern drawl, laughing loudly.

But why did you do it? Shane repeated, her fingers nearly reaching the gun.

Tina shrugged. She watched as Shane, not realizing Tina had seen her movements, grasped her weapon. Why not? Cocking the gun, she pointed it downward. Goodbye, Shane. She pulled the trigger, shooting Shane right between the eyes, and watched as her body fell back to the floor, gun skittering out of her hand across the floor.

Tina cocked her head as she heard sirens in the distance. Tossing the gun carelessly aside, she ran to the cabinet, pulling it open and extracting a clean shirt. She stripped off her dirty shirt, making sure to remove the empty bags of fake blood strapped to her chest, and then tossed it all into the roaring fire in the fireplace before putting on the new shirt. Poor Helena, she laughed aloud to herself as she pulled the sleeves down. I bet you never stopped to think that there might be more than one gun full of blanks. After having done that, she opened the low cabinet in which shed shoved Marinas body into earlier, grunting as she dragged it across the floor to its original place by the table.

Hearing the sirens approaching, and noticing the strobe of blue and red lights coming in through the rain-streaked window, Tina took a deep breath and forced herself to start crying as she mussed up her hair.

Dropping herself to the floor, she curled herself up into the fetal position, crying softly as she waited to tell the police how she, Tina Kennard, had somehow amazingly managed to fight off the crazed killer Helena Peabody.

Hearing the shouts of the officers outside as they began forcing the door open, Tina couldnt resist smiling to herself, gleefully murmuring, And then there was one. No one would ever figure out the truth.
