And Then…You
Within seconds Bette was on the heels of the gurney wheeling Stevie in. Before she
could get a good look it disappeared behind two heavy double doors and a nurse.
Nurse: “Ma’am, you can’t come in here.”
Bette: “But that’s my…she’s my…”
The words seemed to elude Bette at the current moment.
Bette: “We have to get married, I have to make sure she’s ok.”
Nurse: “The doctors are tending to your fiancé ma’am*”
Fiancé, that’s it.
Nurse: “One will be out to update you on her condition as soon as they know something.”
Bette: “But…”
Nurse: “Please wait in the waiting room.”
The nurse turned on her heels and also disappeared behind the doors.
Bette was left staring at the grey doors as tears streamed down her face. Large
hot, fat tears that seemed to never cease.
Shane came running into the ER shortly after. She approached the nurse’s station to ask about Bette but she noticed her standing in front of the doors and thought better of it.
Shane: “Bette. Bette what happened? Are you ok?”
Bette looked over to Shane, the realization that she would have to explain to her about Stevie hit her and she began to sob. Shane enveloped her in a hug, confused. Sobs racked Bette’s frame as she held onto Shane for dear life.
Shane: “Shhhh, its ok. Tell me what’s wrong. Are you hurt?
Shane came to the hospital fearing for Bette’s health and safety. She looked fine but something was clearly wrong.
Shane pulled back from her a bit so she could look her in the eye.
Shane: “Bette, what is it?
The one word slipped passed Bette’s lips that would shake Shane up far worse then she had prepared herself for.
Bette: “St-Stevie…”
The sobs came full force again as the pain washed over her once more.
Shane shook her head in disbelief. She was here to check on Bette. How’d Stevie get into this?
Shane: “Wait what do you mean Stevie? I came here for you. What happened?”
Bette could only cry. She tried to get a hold of her emotion enough to say all that she knew, which wasn’t much, but she couldn’t verbalize it fast enough for Shane’s liking.

as with everyone else, Hope stevie is Ok!, my fav phrase is ”tell me a secret”.
Stevei’s stuff she can pull out of this. Its not Bette fault. Was it the guy who was arguing about the parking space?
Hope Stevie will wake up soon!
tell me a secret..its that Stevie is going to wake up and be fine and she and Bette are going to go home and make alot of love and live happily ever after…RIGHT vibes????
Sad and sweet at the same time. I love the “tell me a secret” part. Steve is lucky, hollow tips bullets are no joke. So was it the driver she had a argument with or someone from her past?
Stevie is lucky that she made it this far. Lets hope the one kidney holds up.
No, no, no….why did this have to happen? The kids are going to be wrecked (if they understand what’s happened at all). And poor Bette, telling a resting Stevie to “tell me a secret”; how poignant. I’m glad you’re back but hurry up and post soon. Hopefully Stevie won’t be in this coma for long. If she gets worse I think Bette may fall complately apart for good.
