    Another Christmas

“Angelica, get out of that bed and go to the bathroom right now,” Bette commanded. Her order was met by a muffled giggle as Angie slithered across the bed and poked her head out from under the duvet of the foot of the bed.

“Hi Mama,” the little girl said, giggling.

“Angie, I’m not in the mood to play games. Go get in the bath.”

Angie climbed out from under the sheets, leaving an even bigger mess behind, to Bette’s annoyance.

“I can’t,” Angie said practically. “I already have my PJs on.”

Bette narrowed her eyes. It was true, Angie was clad in her favorite pair of hot pink PJs. “So you do. But I’m not letting you go to bed dirty.”

“I’m not dirty, Mama,” Angie said, jumping around in place. “I’ll go to bed now, if you read to me.”

Bette weighed her options. She could wrangle a keyed-up Angie and make her take a bath, or she could just tuck her into bed now, read for a few minutes, and call it a night. Bette’s fatigue won out.

“Alright. Go climb into bed and I’ll read to you. But then you are going right to sleep,” Bette warned.

“Yayayayayayayay…” Angie streaked out of the room in a hot pink blur. Bette closed her eyes momentarily and prayed for patience. Then she straightened the sheets on the bed and headed towards Angie’s room.

It wasn’t so bad being a stay-at-home mother. Since they’d moved to New York, work was keeping Tina very busy, but very fulfilled; Tina loved her job and was good at it. Bette had decided that she didn’t want to return to work right away, since Tina was so busy. She wanted to make sure Angie made the adjustment to New York and school before she started working again. Bette needn’t have worried – Angie had taken to the city like a duckling to water. The little girl loved school, her routine, and the endless activities that Bette either thought up or was cajoled into that the city offered. The flip side to that was that Angie had figured out that her mother rarely said no and couldn’t abide whining. Bette worried that constantly getting her way would spoil Angie rotten, and strove to figure out ways to make her daughter a little more appreciative. Nothing had worked so far. Angie had a way of working around all of Bette’s attempts at discipline and control, like by putting her pajamas on to avoid a bath. Bette knew something had to give, but she was willing to roll with the status quo, for now. A gradual change as Angie got used to discipline would be preferable to just dropping the hammer. Besides, it was the holidays.
