    Backstory

“Stop it right now,” the forceful matriarch commanded the tired group.

She continued, “We must be on our best behavior. After all, it’s been years and we want to make a good impression.”

“I don’t understand why you thought this was a good idea,” the patriarch hissed quietly, unwilling to show their dissension to the group.

“Did you have a better idea?”

He glared for a few moments and then stomped away to the back of the travelers. He knew his mate was correct bur that did not prevent his anger at the reproof.

He snarled at the stragglers, “Catch up.  You’re always lagging behind.”  His venom was out of proportion to the ten feet between those at the very back and the rest of the group.

They had started their journey hours and hours earlier and, as the trip dragged on, many of the younger group members had begun to whisper among themselves, careful to not be overheard.

    “Shouldn’t we have checked first?”

“It’s supposed to be a surprise.”

“We don’t even know if she’ll be happy to see us.”

    “She did run away.”

“She didn’t run away, not really.  She just knew that we would try to get her to stay.”

“Why haven’t we heard from her?”

“Maybe Mama has.  Besides, it’s hard to communicate with us, especially not face to face.”

The long-term impetus for the trip was that the family was feeling crowded by the development taking place around their home.  Tempers had gotten short and the cooperation that had been crucial to the family’s prosperity was fraying.  It had taken the matriarch several months of sharing well-placed observations with her mate to convince him that there was a problem.  It took even longer to analyze possible solutions.  However, their timeline was accelerated following a shooting incident that made the parents fear for the family’s safety. They needed a fresh start and their mother was sure that her absent child would shelter them until they found a new direction.

The matriarch had decided that they should follow the prodigal’s trail.  She had emphatically assured the group that they would be welcomed, despite the years that had elapsed since there had been contact.  In her heart, though, she wasn’t sure.  She had never stopped loving and missing her unusual child, but she wasn’t sure that the child, now a grown woman, knew that.

    1. Shit, it’s Tina’s long lost family! A pack of yellow-eyed, furry wolves! ROFLMAO!!! “Don’t get me wrong. I love her just like the others, but even you have to admit, she is different. I mean, where did she come from? There is certainly no one in my family like that.” => *mwahahahaha* You know I had to reread this just to make sure I got the punchline right. This is a real hoot, Spumoni. Thank you or in wolf-speak, *AWWWOOOOOOOOO*! ;>

    2. I was wondering about the end of pg 2 why the hell am I reading this, it is so obvious that it was animals. Then I got to the end of pg 3 and just almost fell off the chair laughing. You are a real devil, posting this one LOL!!!!!. We love Tina even though we don’t know anything about her family. Wolves, indeed. where was Alice, she should have been around, since it was her idea that Tina must have been reared by wolves. It would have just been too funny with Alice there. Loved it.

    3. I called it, I knew it was Tina too, but not because of the “raised by wolves” theory, just cos they kept going on about how different she was, and the pink skin. I didn’t catch that the family was wolves, I have read too many of helebette’s fics and thought they were vampires or zombies or something, though I believe even those undead creatures also have thumbs… The last line was great, instead of Bette freaking that there is a pack of wolves on her porch, as anyone might, though one might think a pack of wolves trudging though the streets of West Hollywood might have been noticed, anyway instead she just calls to Tina, “it’s for you…”! Great fic Spumoni!!!

    4. I thought this was brilliant the first time I read it posted elsewhere, however you didn’t have the quotes from Doyle and Shaw, LMAO!!! Fantastic!!!
