“I see you’ve come home to lick your wounds. Now should I be prepared to scrape you off the ground, or hold you while you weep? I am prepared for either, darling.”

“Yes, yes, please do kick me while I’m down, Mummy. Thanks so much,” Helena muttered keeping her gaze on her desk.

“You’re quite welcome. May I sit?”

Helena glanced up and over at her mother standing almost hesitantly in her office doorway.

She arched a brow and couldn’t help but smirk.

“You mean I have a choice? Whether you stay or go?”

Peggy rolled her eyes and seemed to shake off whatever was holding her immobile as she strode further into the room and took a seat across from Helena.

“I’m at a loss, Helena. I admit that freely. Your father told me of your plan and yet I see you here. So tell me you did the sensible thing and told Bette the truth.”

    “It’s over if that’s what you’re asking.”

“I wasn’t asking that. I am asking if you told her the truth? I know your mind, Helena. The way it works and–“

“Are you really going to sit there and psychoanalyze me? Mummy I really don’t want to talk about it,” Helena said with a sigh.

Peggy re-crossed her legs and narrowed her eyes.

“So you didn’t tell her the truth. Helena what do you think you’re doing? Is this the way you want to live your life? Through lies and misery?”

Lightly rubbing one of the paperweights on her desk Helena turned her attention from her mother. She knew that her mother was only trying to help, but she didn’t have the heart to talk about what had happened.

She knew that both her parents were disappointed with her. And she couldn’t blame them, because she was disappointed in herself as well.

“I want to move on with my life. I am going to move on.”

“I tried calling you, but you didn’t answer so that’s why I came in person. Besides I wanted to get a look at you. See if you were as broken as I imagined you were.”

    “I’m not broken,” Helena snapped.

Peggy arched her own brow at that.
