Betrayal in the First Degree Chapter 4
Summary of the previous chapter: Bette tells Tina she is going to the CAC to pack up her office. Afraid of what Bette might do, Tina decides to accompany her. The girls head over to Bette and Tinas house.
As Alice and Dana are searching for signs of life or murder at the Kennard-Porter residence, Bette and Tina have driven to the CAC. Per usual, Bette has a light jazz station playing on the radio. Their conversation has been limited to the usual pleasantries: Bette asking Tina if the temperature in the car is comfortable, comments on traffic, etc.
Bette and Tina arrive at the CAC and Bette unlocks the door and deactivates the alarm. She walks to the storage room where office supplies are kept and finds a half dozen empty boxes which had contained copy paper. Carrying the boxes, she goes to her office to find Tina staring out the window. Without comment, Bette goes to her desk to begin emptying personal possessions. When she notices Tina turn from the window, Bette asks her if she would mind packing the books on the bookcase nearest the window.
Tina begins the task.
Would you like some music while we work? Bette asks Tina.
Uh, sure.
Any preferences?
Whatever is fine.
Bette turns on the radio which is set to a top 40, pop station. She has finished with her desk and has started removing pictures from the wall.
The radio begins to play a song by Chicago.
Baby, so you think you start again.
Youve got somebody new, but the same thing keeps happenin
At the moment of truth, whoever youre lovin
You will be thinking of me.
As long as Niagara falls
Tina tries desperately to hold in her emotions as she tells Bette that she needs to use the wash room. Entering the empty room, Tina sinks to the floor allowing her tears to fall as the lines from the song echo in her head. At the moment of truth, whoever youre love loving/ you will be thinking of me.
She had been thinking of Bette, it would have been impossible not to do so as she and Helena were in the bed that Tina shared with Bette. However, it wasnt the bed that made Tina think of Bette.
After about fifteen minutes, Tina composes herself and returns to find Bette downloading files from the laptop on her desk.
You okay? You were in there awhile. Bette says as she watches Tina walk into the room.
Fine. Tina responds weakly.
She returns to box the last shelf of books as she hears Bette close the laptop.
Might as well start the fun part of carting this out. Bette says as she squats down to pick up a box of books that Tina has completed.
Want some help, babe? Tina asks.
No, good for the muscles. Bette responds with a small laugh as she flexes her arm like a body builder. Tina wondered if that was a physical threat, but there was no indication that was Bettes intention. Things are so calm, Tina could almost let herself forget the events that led to her being in the CAC at that moment. Perhaps Im going crazy. She wonders to herself, Was today my imagination?
Bette returns and takes out another box of books. Finished with the bookshelf, Tina sinks into Bettes office chair as she waits for Bette to return from the car. She continues to sit and wait as she watches Bette take out all of the boxes that have been filled. Bette leaves to go to the storage room and returns with two more boxes.
This should do it. She says as she walks into the room holding them.
Tina sits dejectedly as Bette finishes packing her personal items. She looks for the picture of them that usually sat upon the desk and notices that Bette has already packed it.
Tinas thoughts, of which she is trying to have as few as possible, are interrupted by the sound of Bettes voice.
So what do you think I should take?
Huh?
Do you see anything in here that is worth taking, sort of accidentally gets packed with my stuff?
I cant think of anything.
*****, cant forget that. Bette snaps her fingers and heads toward James desk. Tina hears the rustling of papers followed by the sound of Bette using the copier.
The radio continues to play. It is now playing Silver Spring and the unmistakable voice of Stevie Nicks echoes in the room:
You could be my silver spring
Blue – green colors flashing
I would be your only dream
Your shining over ocean crashing
Don’t say that she’s pretty
And did you say that she loved you
Baby I don’t want to know
So I begin not to love you
Turn ’round, see me running
I say I loved you years ago
But tell myself you never loved me no
And don’t say that she’s pretty
And did you say that she loved you
Baby I don’t want to know
Oh no
And can you tell me was it worth it
Baby I don’t want to know
Time cast a spell on you
But you won’t forget me
I know I could have loved you
But you would not let me
Time cast a spell on you
But you won’t forget me
I know I could have loved you
But you would not let me
I follow you down ’till the sound
Of my voice will haunt you
(Give me just a chance)
You’ll never get away from the sound
Of the woman who loves you
(Was I just a fool)
I follow you down ’till the sound
Of my voice will haunt you
(Give me just a chance)
You’ll never get away from the sound
Of the woman who loves you
(Was I just a fool)
Tina thinks: Dont say that shes pretty / And did you say that she loved you / Baby I dont want to know.
Sure Helena was attractive, but she couldnt hold a candle to Bettes beauty. There was no love between her and Tina. *****, Tina hadnt known the woman long enough to truly like her much less love her.
So why the ***** did I do it. What the ***** was I thinking? Tina asks herself.
The line from the song again echoed in her head. Baby I dont want to know.
Bette returns to the office and places a stack of papers in a box. Might as well take some names and numbers. She says to Tina before taking one last look around the office is which she had practically lived for so long. Ready?
Each carrying a box, Bette and Tina walk out of the CAC and into the LA night.

I’m with Lost. Let the real Bette Porter come out.
I am starting to think that maybe Bette was so traumatised by the whole thing she blocked it out of her head. But I have a feeling that is not where you’re heading. Again great story telling, and I’m still on the edge of my seat. Thanks
I’m hooked…please give us more.
Will the real Bette Porter please stand up.
I am liking it but I am a little confused on how Bette is behaving. Other than that I like it.
Ok! I’m still waiting for Bette and how’s she have a calm like that. Let see what happen next, thank you!
