    Breaking silence

Do you know what you need? Shane asked, standing behind Tina, combing her fingers through her friend’s thick blonde locks.

Something to cover my grays? Tina guessed, tilting back her head to look upside down into Shane’s dark blue eyes.

    A puppy.

    A puppy?

Yeah. Jordan would love a puppy.

    You’re kidding, right?

No, Shane shrugged, walking around Tina’s chair to examine her head from every angle. I’m totally serious.

If you can find a puppy who knows how to use the toilet, let me know. I can only potty train one baby at a time.

Hmm. Maybe a stuffed animal is the way to go for now, Shane conceded, smiling at Tina in the wall-length mirror in front of her styling station.

Did you have a dog as a kid?

Absolutely. My mom picked up a lot of strays. Dogs, cats. People.

Tina nodded slowly, considering. Can Iumask you a question?

    Sure.

Do youhave you ever thought about getting in touch with her?

Shane’s hands stilled for a moment, scissors poised in suspended motion, and Tina looked up, meeting Shane’s gaze reflected in the glass.

I don’t know how to find her, came the quiet reply. I wouldn’t know where to look.

    If you knew. Would you?

Shane blinked, narrowing her eyes and returning to her work. Yes, she admitted.

    Evenafter everything that happened?

There was a long pause, and while Tina waited for a response, the hum of chatter and the buzz of hair dryers and the whir of clippers inside the salon seemed to disappear.

My mom loved me. She justhad a lot of ***** to deal with and couldn’t keep me. But she did the best that she could. That’s all anybody can do, right?

Tina swallowed hard. Aren’t you angry? She asked, barely audibly. Aren’t you stillhurt?

Why? Because she couldn’t be who I wanted her to be? Or needed her to be?

    Yes.”

    What’s the point?

Shane put down her scissors and gently brushed back the hair from Tina’s forehead. I don’t think any parent tries to ***** up with their kid. But people make mistakes. They do things or say things andthey ***** up.

I guess, Tina said, chewing her lower lip.

Lots of times, though, when parents ***** up? It teaches their kids not to make the same mistakes.

Tina watched two tears splash onto the black vinyl smock she was wearing and roll off onto the floor. I won’t make the same mistakes, she vowed, half to herself.

I know you won’t, Shane said, lightly drying the glistening tear streaks on Tina’s face with the back of her hand.

Soumhave you ever thought about getting a puppy? Tina asked, clearing her throat, suddenly shy.

Maybe some day, Shane said, picking up her scissors again. Right now my schedule’s kinda whacked for a puppy. I don’t want to get one until I know I can take care of it.

Tina smiled, making a mental note to pick up two stuffed animals at the toy store on her way home.

    1. This is a really great story line. Kudos to Shane for understanding that her mom tried her best. I hope she convinced Tina that she should contact her family.

    2. Brilliant as ever.
A great bonding moment for SHane and Tina. Something never touched on in the show so thanks for the moment.
Maybe Shane’s need for peaxe with her mum will help Tina find her way back to her own parents.
Can’ wait to see how this story unfolds.

    3. Hey FFC, =) Wonderful conversation, as always. I especially love where everything is going; the urge to have to reconcile with family, the conflict which comes with rejection. I’m looking forward to where you’re going to be taking us. Cheers!

    4. This reads like and feels like I am watching a major motion picture…someone pass me the popcorn. How can you be this good? Hats off to your inspiration.

    5. Nice idea to get Shane’s take on this and it was refreshing to hear that she doesn’t hold a grudge against her mother. Cute chapter.
