Breathe– Chapter 28
Bette nodded at the officer on duty as she moved a large stack of files under her arm and slid the card key through the secured lock on the hotel room door.
After working with Judy Dwyer for several hours, they had been able to draft and place a same-day, front page story in the last few press runs of the Seattle Times and calls were already flooding the station.
According to Dwyer, the morning would bring the story running in five more editions blanketing all of King and parts of Thurston, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties. By the end of the following day, all of Western Washington and any Eastern Washington hotels, restaurants or newsstands that carried the Seattle Times would have the story.
Knowing that most leads would lead nowhere, Bette still needed to investigate every delivery man who looked like the sketch, every dead-beat, ex- husband who fit the profile, and every money-owing in-law who had always “looked like a killer”.
From experience she knew it took only one call to crack a case wide open, and those calls often came from the most innocent or unusual sources.
Just last year, a call from a dry cleaner had led Bette to the “Gentleman Bandits”, two ruthless armed robbery suspects who dressed the part in fine, Italian designer suits, but were anything but gentleman in their behavior having killed a mother of three during their last bank robbery.
Recently, Bette had served a search warrant on a residence where a troubled wife was unsure if she should notify police but wanted to confirm that it was animal bones she had found in a barrel when preparing for a garage sale.
Forensics confirmed the bones were human, and within days Bette was handing her husband, a suspected serial killer, over to officers from Dade County, Florida.
It only took one and Bette needed to make sure she didn’t miss or overlook her one call.
Knowing that most calls would come the first 48 hours, with each day bringing fewer tips finally reducing to a trickle by week’s end, Bette proposed and Captain Benson approved the formation of a multi-department task force.
The team was built to provide almost 400 investigative hours over three eight-hour shifts a day with the goal of further researching or dismissing each and every call within 36 hours of receiving the information.

Excellent chapter. You make me want to wring this guy’s neck. But I think I’ll let Bette do it.
Your profile of the killer is, sadly, chillingly real.
Thanks for the update!
Are you this guy??? How can someone come up with this stuff that is so riviting, so absolutely believable, I have never read a book in this field, and I know that I couldn’t but I read this rivited to my computer because you have made me believe this story. Yes I love the B/T part, but everything about this screams reality, even in it’s sick way. Truely you are talented, How does your husband relate to this side of you? I can’t phathom how someone has this ability to put into words and then make others feel so much..This story is amazing, you must be amazing…I am so babbling it’s rediculious, but see here is a person who can’t write that wishes they could so that I could put into words exactly what this story makes me feel…totally mind blowing…pls don’t stop it, I hate to think that there is an end to your writing…such a sad day that will be…THANK YOU for this story and for you!!!!

I would be happy if you were just 1/3 through..I know I’m sick like that but I don’t want your story to end but I know everything is falling into place..but are you more than 1/3? are you at 1/2..no can’t be..lol please allow me to attest to the addiction I have reading fanfic, I dare not write or I’ll never have time for my partner..she’s nice enough to not be jealous of my reading, but again I learn new parlor tricks in lots of the stories so I think that keeps her ok with my lil hobby..lol
wow sox this was genious..excellent..amazing…brilliant!! Im just WOW
This killer is very smart..he knows how the cops works..so maybe he is from inside…damn he is really playing with Bette…he really wants to see her loose control.
Post soon!!.
You are AMAZING! I’m completely hooked! If this were a book I would be reading cover to cover without putting it down, having to wait for each chapter is torture! POST SOON!
Wow Sox that chapter was amazing! It actually made my breath catch in my throat reading that last paragraph! I just hope that this psycho gets caught soon leaving both Bette and Tina unharmed. Thanks for posting even without any sleep!
soxy – you are a master and how you are playing with us. We get the girls and all their inner story plus the creep on the outside always seemingly one step ahead. It’s maddening but I do think Bette is not being cautious enough – as soon as she saw those pictures at the scene she should have had a female set of officers with Tina at all times as well as the guards outside. Or am I feeling a bit hysterical due to your awesome threateningly clever murderer. More soon when you can.
Before I even read this let me just say that yeah, I must admit Skipton is great. But you are my first love Sox1. My one and only.
Sox, you never disappoint me with your writing. And for this I am grateful.
Let me say that I am not surprised that our guy knows where B & T are. He is an expert stalker, thus he is only seen and noticed when he wants to be. I do believe that he could be anywhere, anytime. Is he following Bette around or is he holding vigil outside the hotel?
I am not entirely convinced that he needs to be a part of the police force or CSI to make this happen, as he seems to have a refined ‘talent’ for watching and waiting.
Now, when they relocate from the hotel, I am left only to assume that he will not be far behind. As such, I wait with baited breath for a confrontation of some sort.
Maybe he could travel out of town on a family vacation or something. That would give everyone a false sense of security and allow him to pounce at will (considering his MO), but his ego (or job, if he has one.) may not allow such a thing.
I know it’s silly but I can’t help but wonder if Bailey man at the hotel with Tina, or is he roaming Bette’s exclusive neighborhood at will (smile)?
I hold my breath and await another post. Thank You, Sox.
superb!!!!!!!!!
This is sooo good, the guy is like super creepy man.. u have me reading it from behind my knees, lol! I know, i know wot a girl..
I hope things are picking up sox and ur ok,
Thanks for the awesome story.. xIx
What will they do now? Where will they go? When will you post next? You are killing me with this.
What a chapter!!!
Just had a thought. What if the guards get drugged. This guy’s access is far reaching. As such, he could drug the cops much in the same way he drugs the women to gain access to Tina.
I have begun to evaluate everyone you have introduced us to along this journey. You have done a superb job, because (although I have yet to draw a conclusion) it could be just about anyone of the characters or a ‘stranger.’ Job well done. Kudos
Dam that was good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! post soon
Sox,
Still thinking and praying for you and yours.
Grinning from ear to ear, good buddy!
Good to see that I am not the only night owl on the site. Seems like you work hard and play harder. Hee hee :D
This story has been motoring along at a relatively steady speed. It has enticed and captivated every reader with the attention to detail and the tremendous twists and turns, tender touches and tormented traumas.
However it looks like you have felt the need to pick up speed.
The sheer veracity and audacity of the killer is spellbinding. It does seem like Bette and Tina are the prey under the watchful eye of lion. Ever ready to pounce and scatter its quarry in opposite directions. The boldness and daring of this dramatic development show how much a game of cat and mouse it is.
Bette, however is the Mongoose, lurking the Cobra to its final and fatal battle. This cunning little animal plays the venomous snake at its own game and returns triumphant. As I am sure that Bette will do.
Her love and need for Tina will provide the strength and courage to defeat all odds.
I was excited to see these lovers reunited after the trauma of their day.
Tina’s simple acquiescence of her imposed imprisonment in the five star prison made my heart jump. Only true love can help us accept what we can not change and do so willing.
You have crafted an eloquent and natural romance between the two leads and then, dammit, pulled the rug from under their feet as we realise the closeness of this psycho.
I am willing you to find the time and post soon as this story provides a gentle soliloquy to honest emotions and love followed a phenomenal adrenalin rush. I can’t wait!
Your Loyal Fan.
Sox1, last comment/question on this chapter, I promise. Is Tina at the point where she would recognize him on sight. I mean she saw him very quickly at the coffeeshop and leaving the apartment, as well as from afar on the boat? The fact is he could have delivered the paper himself considering his skill level and ego. Shouldn’t the cops be signing for and inspecting any package that she may receive. In all honesty danger is always lurking.
Just so you know, yes I read each chapter more than once (gotta make sure I don’t miss anything, smile). You’ve got me hooked. Until the next episode, I wait patiently.
I can only reiterate what has been previously stated by all the other well thought out comments. You are an amazing writer and have me totally addicted to this story … as someone mentioned . yes i love the B&T storyline . but the crimnal mind you have created is phenominal … so geedily looking for to the next chapter … i hope you get some sleep but seems that you are unstoppable!
Chilling!!! Okay, so do they have cameras in the hallways of the hotel? I mean, that sounds too easy. I’m sure he is much to smart to allow that kind of a slip up. It always amazes me how intelligent and creative these whackos are. With all that working in their favor, I wonder what drives them to such senseless and destructive acts. Another excellent post, Sox!
ok sox I think this might be really bad for me to say but I like the killer.
Ok now I think I should go into hiding now LOL
Man Sox, you did it again…hit a bullseye with this chapter.
The wonderful thing about leads is that they are like lottery tickets – you can have a million usless ones, but it only takes one to hit the jack pot. The golden egg is out there just waiting to be found.
I was a little surprised that Bette didn’t ask the cop initially who delivered the newspaper or whether or not Tina had asked for one to be delivered. The killer has already proved that he can move about easily, he has shown pictures that prove he can find them. But then again, Bette is relying on years of experience and the trust that Tina is being guarded by Seattle’s best…and that they have the same investment in Tina’s safety that she does. Powerful stuff, that was.
Loved the comparison of Bette’s dectective work to art. Nice blending of who she is versus what she does.
I think that you put the NC-17 in just the right place. These are two fractured souls that keep getting separated by time, space and duty that needed the comfort and reconnection that physical intimacy provides. They go through an emotional hurricane on a daily basis and need to come together in the eye of the storm to fortify themselves for the next onslaught. Nicely done. It’s never gratuitous or crass in nature…loving and tender.
Besides, Bette is powerless in her efforts to resist the tractor beam that is Tina arching her eyebrow!
They have for each other a protective undercurrent. Thankfully, Tina has realized that she’s no match for the killer and was willing to listen to Bette explain the nuances of the newspaper article. Hopefully, that will keep her tethered in common sense and she won’t make any rash decisions or expose herself unnecessarily in the future.
Death and trauma can be a powerful conduit for insecurity and fear. Tina is able to verbalize Bette’s fears before she can and Bette can sense Tina’s need to be loved. The pendulum of trust swings both ways and they are finding their balance in ‘forever’.
I was wondering, does the hotel have security cameras? Would there possibly be a video of if not his presence in the hotel, perhaps of the person that delivered the paper?
My stomach lurched when Bette unfolded the paper. Such an intense reaction, excellent writing to provoke such a response. You’re never safe, until the criminal is caught.
His ego is growing exponentially. The sheer audacity that he is exhibiting is frightening. Yet at the same time, it is exposing his very own insecurities. An unremarkable man in most aspects, a child that wants attention. Curious to know just what happened to him as either an adult or a child that set him on this path.
Will he claim a name for himself like the Son of Sam, or The Zodiac Killer or has the media already given him a moniker?
You have written for me, one of the best lesbian detective stories that I have read in ages. The fact that Bette and Tina are the central characters only sweetens the pot. Superb job! Stupendous.
And as for the little fib to your hubby…hey, I’ll cover for you as long as you keep writing. It’ll be our little secret.
What a twist of emotions! I was feeling so good with the Bette and Tina love and then, the newspaper and his spying! What a twist – really good and suspenseful.
Just wondering what the heck does he do that he has so much time?! I don’t think he is a cop, at least not someone on the team; and the knife is still making me think – some kind of hunter.
Good good chapter – nice way to twist our emotions. Thanks much.
Ido believe Young Ladie that you are trying to kill all your readers. He is watching there ever move. he is a brave SOB and very angry right now. He has fail to kill the one he want dead. Your writing is so great, you keep us on the edge of our seat. Get some sleep Thanks for posting.
O.M.G!!!!! This getting soooo good. Hurry and post again soon.
Sox..you are amazing.
I saw this and thought.. don’t read it before bed. Then I got out of bed to read because I could not wait – your story is amazing.. too good to wait :)
Damn this is scary!
