Breathe- Chapter 7
Jamescall to the emergency room staff at Harborview Hospital in downtown Seattle had prepared them for Bettes arrival. Understanding the need for discretion in a police matter, the floor nurse on duty was waiting at the metal detectors just inside the main entrance.
All eyes were on Bette as she removed her police-issued weapon from its holster. She placed it on the tray, along with a replacement clip of ammunition, a small container of pepper spray, a pair of silver handcuffs, and finally a pair of plastic flexi-cuffs which she removed from her jacket pocket.
The security guard nodded when Bette held up her gold detectives badge and added it to the growing pile of items. She met Tinas questioning gaze directly and shrugged saying Tools of the trade, as she motioned for Tina to pass through the metal detector before her.
Are you sure you dont have a high-powered rifle or nuclear device you need to declare? Tina asked with raised eyebrows as she passed through the security machine. Bette smiled at the first words Tina had spoken since they left the house. The smile was replaced by frustration as the machines alarm was triggered.
Detective, the security guard began. Please empty your pockets of all items and pass through the detector again. Bette quickly turned to look at the guard, trying to determine if his stern tone was standard behavior or he saved this particular performance for law enforcement or real cops she was sure he was thinking. She removed a few coins and an ink pen, and grimaced when the alarm sounded again.
She took a deep breath and rolled her eyes at Tina and the floor nurse. I should be with you both in just a minute, She said in a tone she hoped didnt reveal her irritation. She knew if challenged, this security guard would delay her even further because, well, because he could.
Detective, he repeated again, his tone now suggesting this single word held its own unspoken meaning. Please remove your jacket. Place it on the conveyor and,
I know, Bette interrupted good-naturedly, offering him a full smile, pass through the detector again. No problem at all. She met Tinas eyes and both knew it was a problem, but Bette was determined to maintain her composure. After placing her blazer on the conveyor, Bette let out a heavy frustrated sigh as the alarm sounded once more.

Sox,
Absolutely awe inspiring!
The little details that you capture so well have made this a breath taking story. The elements of attraction have been selectively and seductively sneaked in. I am wearing a big cheesy and goofy grin at Tina’s declaration “But, I’m not gay.†I think she has denial, big time.
The way this story has developed with Bette potentially charging over the line just proves how much the heart can rule the head. And how when a chance at happiness comes your way you just have to grab it with both hands, hang on for dear life and be damned of the consequences. Usually there are many but if you are with your soul mate then any storm can be weathered.
I am sitting in purgatory, waiting for Bette’s response and the test results. Will Bette tell Tina that she was the intended victim? What is the murderer’s motive?
Given your talent and hard work, I am sure that these will be answered real soon.
Thank you for this tour de force.
Your Loyal Fan.
My mind has been working overti8me.was someone after Tina or her room mate? Why Tinas picture, was it a warning or what. I will wait for the next chapter. Thanks
“But, I’m not gay.” Oh my.
I guess I was the only one who knew she was str8, ok so I only thought that because she asked to be kissed, she sounded unsure of her self. so she has no family, but I think the foster care is the perfect set up for shane to come into your story. can’t wait to see what bette does not. and to find out what she was drugged with and what form was used.
A very great and interesting chapter. Thank you
soxey – I’m lovin’ the story.. well done! I’m a sucker for the “you’re the first woman I’ve kissed” Can’t wait to see where you’re taking them. -clammy
Great chapter as always, I wonder how Bette is going to tack the news about Tina not being gay and her being the first women she has ever kissed.

Excellent Sox. Bette as a flawed character is much more interesting to me. Her emotional weakness makes her more real.
Well, I had a whole theory in my mind, but with Tina’s revelation… it kinda falls apart, lol.
Anyway, great chapter, but please, please, don’t turn it into a love story, keep the mystery coming too :)
But I know you’ll find a way to juggle with the two just fine ;)
xxx

Tell Mr. Sox that he can’t kick you off the computer…your fans await your next installment. Better yet let me send over one of my extra laptops. That way you can write anywhere. I simply love this story.
Great story. I like how your moving it along just enough without rushing it. I know Bette will get the guy, cos she’s gotta save Tina. Tina well, girl its too late now your on your way over to the other side. Looking forward to the next update.
OK I can’t wait to fine who is the SERIAL KILLER? Please continue Thanks.
I agree with cnick It’s Kate Delafield – but better. Tina will just have to remember that “resistance is futile”:0)
To me it seems perfectly reasonable that Tina has never kissed a woman before. The trauma that she has gone through and the fact that Bette has been her life line has to affect her feelings for the brunette. I am not saying that they wouldn’t have gotten together in other circumstance, but I think Tina’s willingness to be so open with Bette is because she has been so shockingly reminded how fragile life is. That’s my take, and Sox I am like a broken record, your skill is amazing.
That was great!
