Broken, Ch. 6
Dana signed her name to the discharge papers with a flourish and then practically shoved them into the nurses hands. Okay, so I can go now, right?
The nurse laughed. Yes, you can, and something tells me youre ready to.
***** yes! Dana said loudly, without thinking. Clapping a hand over her mouth, she blushed slightly. I mean, uh, well, you know.
I understand, the nurse replied, looking amused as she handed Dana several papers and prescriptions. Here are your care papers, and some prescriptions for some pain medication and things. You can get those filled in the pharmacy downstairs, if youd like. Now, do you have someone to stay with you and help you out, at least until you adjust a little better?
Yes, Dana replied, looking almost glum. Feeling the nurses eyes on her, she said, Im just not used to sharing my space, thats all.
The nurse nodded sympathetically. Well, your friends have rented you a wheelchair and should be up here shortly to get you.
Yay, Dana uttered glancing down at her useless legs under the thin hospital blanket.
As if on cue, Bette and Tina walked into the room bearing a bouquet of flowers and big smiles. Shane was right behind them. Clearing her throat and rolling her eyes, she said, Okay, I just want to make it clear that Alice is making me do this.
I heard that! an indignant Alice called from the hallway.
Good, Shane muttered. Sweeping her arms out, she said grandly, And now, Id like to introduce. She drummed her hands on the counter dramatically. The Dana-mobile.
Alice barged into the room, pushing a wheelchair littered with stickers of kittens, smiley faces, and rainbows. Ta-da!
Danas mouth dropped open. What is that? she asked, taking in the streamers and bicycle horn attached to the arms of the wheelchair, as well as the pinwheel attached to the top.
The Dana-mobile. Duh, Alice answered, sweeping her arm out in front of her, and squeezing the bulb of the bicycle horn. A loud honk filled the air, and Bette winced. She felt Tina jump beside her at the sound. Oh, and look! Alice added, spinning the chair around to show everyone the tennis balls attached to the back of the chair, bouncing merrily along on the ground behind it. Cool, huh? And it gets better. You could put baseball cards in the spokes of the wheels. You know, like you did as a kid with your bike!
