Broken Girls with Strange Frames (Ch. 5)

    Chapter 5: Present-day Contraindication

“What? I can’t talk now.” Bette has an awfully cute way of answering the phone. I mean, I don’t know why other people work so hard at trying to be romantic and accommodating. Seriously, the way to a girl’s heart is to answer the phone with an irritated-sounding, “What? I can’t talk now.”

“Hello? You were supposed to meet me for lunch.” It was the day after Bette and I had met up at Milk and she’d gone and called me her girlfriend-which meant it was the day that, if I were corny and sentimental, I would say was our first official day as a couple.

Luckily, I am neither corny nor sentimental, so really, it was just another Thursday.

“Alice, I said I might meet you for lunch. Might.”

    “Might means will!”

“No, it means might. It means ‘willing people around here don’t ***** up, I will have time to meet you for lunch’. And since some people around here think ***** up is part of their job description…”

“I’m sitting at this caf alone,” I finished.

“Exactly,” Bette said. “Sorry,” she tacked on sloppily at the end.

“It’s fine,” I said, despite the fact that it totally wasn’t. “We’ll have dinner.”

“Sure. That I can do. But I really have to go now, so…”

    “Okay, fine, fine. Oh, wait.”

    Bette sighed heavily. “What?”

“What’s up with Parkland? I drove by it this morning and it had a closed sign up and said it was under new management.”

“Yeah, I saw that a few weeks ago.”

    “What’s that ***** about?”

Bette chuckled. “Sometimes,” she said as if she were talking to an idiot, “the owner of a business, or a coffee shop in this instance, will sell to the highest bidder, at which point the highest bidder becomes the owner. This is called-”

“Funny,” I deadpanned. “I mean, they better not ***** that place up. They’re changing the name to The Planet. What is that?”

    “I think it’s fine.”

    “I think it sounds stupid.”

“Alice, the history of the world is largely based on progress. That’s how civilizations evolve.”

“Bette,” I said, mimicking her insultingly condescending tone, “how does coffee have anything to do with evolution?”

    1. Fun, fun, fun! I so enjoy these two together. This feels like I am getting a glimpse into ‘pre-Bette’. Sort of like her formative years. Or at least before she became the Bette everyone else knows. Alice is killing me in her histrionic righteousness. More, please.

    2. Is it my imagination, or is this getting better with each chapter? And the first was great. I love Alice’s ‘voice’. It’s just dead on. And as for Bette’s characterisation, it’s amazing. It was a really nice touch that she doesn’t like people to be angry with her. It just gives her that touch of vulnerability that makes her so devastating. And her solution of steam-rollering Alice into saying something untrue is just really typical Bette. I say again this is fantastic.

    3. I never could quite see Alice and Bette together…until now!!! Thanks for this ‘most interesting’ glimpse into their past relationship!!

    4. Parallel universe, parallel universe. Intriguing parallel universe.

Is it possible that there’s another group of TLW fans, enjoying this story (instead of the crap-tastic ones of S2)on their pay channels in a parallel universe?

Are our worlds starting to converge?

Is this the ‘good news’ we were told to expect? Evidence for the existence God?

Can we get this one on Showtime, in our lifetimes???

      Any physicists in the house???

Einstein’s theory of light? Will you all be gone before this can reach you to read this? Anyone???

    5. My gods the characterization in this fiction is spot on! Not only that, but you’ve mangaged to add depth that I’m sure Ilene doesn’t even see in these characters or perhaps forgot about with season two. Nice one, I’m dying for more and I’ve only found this series an hour ago! Great story I cannot wait for more. Count me as a die hard fan.
